Help: sunroof stuck almost closed

The sunroof is almost fully closed, but not quite. The motor fails to move it in any direction when the switches are engaged. I pulled the headliner part way and dropped the motor, and it moves just fine out of the mounts and disconnected from the drive gear. So I’m stuck trying to figure out how to free the drive gearing and manually close this thing. I never plan on opening it again, so no need to completely replace everything. I just need to close it.

Already tried that and the window slips back down to that same position. Something needs to happen with the track/gearing

I’m thinkin you might have to take the whole thing apart and get mid evil with it... not sure what year it is.. but found a vid of a dude that removed his and he might touch on some points that might help you. Worst case scenario RTV silicone and wedge it up for 24 hrs??

I had to help the window motor completely close the driver window because the window motor was going bad. you could put the motor back on and help push the glass back to it closed position then the gearing will hold it closed.

That video is where I got the idea to hit the motor’s switch to move it forward for a second while the motor was out of the bracket, and reinstall it to try to get it to move back and fully close, but it was a no-go. Something is binding, and since I can manually push the window up the few millimeters it needs to go (and it still drops back down), I suspect it’s the gearing/drive shaft.

Not working. I am reasonably sure I have a frozen worm drive between the motor and the window.

I replaced both screw drives and center tube section to restore mine a few years ago. I can tell you from having it apart, the screw drives pass through a bent section of copper piping with a very tight tolerance. They can easily get jammed up with enough gunk, moisture, corrosion, etc. One of your cables may be preventing the whole shebang from returning to its home position.

One thing you could try is look in the FSM in the section on adjusting the moonroof. There is a procedure that makes the roof close tighter at the leading edge or it can back off. Might help you get it to fully close.

Yes. I did this repair and you do need to drop and remove the headliner, though you can get creative and not remove all of the interior side panels if you don't want.

As Saturn said, there's a worm gear on each side that runs up to the motor and passes through a copper tube. Very common place for it to get gunked up.

When I did mine a couple years ago, the worm gears and copper tube was still available from Toyota so I went that route. It wasn't cheap.
