Help! Toyota quoted $5K for repairs!

Hi guys, I've got a 2005 Toyota 4runner Sport V8 150K miles with the XREAS system. My wife complained that the rear end of the car felt loose or wobbly. So I decided to take it into Toyota to diagnose. Attached below is what they quoted me, $5,067!:toilet:! Any advice on what I should do and replace and how difficult it would be would be great! My biggest concern is ordering the right aftermarket part, unless I should be ordering all Toyota OEM.

I did some research and found that I can order Bilstein 5100 and FJ cruiser springs to remove the XREAS system (I just ordered this). However I'm unsure of the control arms and axle parts. I can't seem to cross reference the parts number besides putting the part # into rockauto which is returning nothing. Can I replace just the lateral links (which I think is the problem) or do I need to replace the control arm also?

This is absurd. You're doing right by replacing with Bilsteins and new coils. Cheap (relatively speaking), and arguably better -- since they have a lifetime warranty.

If you type those part numbers into Google you'll see multiple sources for them, as well as descriptions and prices.

Also, go to an online OEM parts outlet like OEM Toyota & Scion Parts Online | Lakeland Toyota Parts Overstock. There you can put in your vehicle info and find an exploded view with part numbers of the subassembly you're interested in. (you can also just enter in the dealer part numbers into the search box and they'll come up directly). They also have good prices and you know they are genuine Toyota parts. For example, they quote the first part (48720-35061) at $163.47 compared to the $217.00 your dealer quoted.

I agree about the Bilsteins. They have great reviews on this forum vs. repairing the XREAS system.

Couple more things. The front CV axle is available from NAPA as a remanufactured unit for $70. I personally think that's better than a cheap aftermarket new one. Second, if you don't feel comfortable about replacing this stuff yourself, find a good offroad shop to do it, one that will allow you to bring in your own parts. The offroad shops do a lot more of this kind of work than the dealers do, and will be able to set you up exactly how you want.

Thanks Ron! This is much appreciated and exactly what I was looking for. I'll get the Axle from Napa and look for an offroad shop. I'm pretty good on the mechanical side, but have never touched suspension work. I typically do brakes, and engine related items.

I'd check for a wheel that is out of round, or air pressure...

I'd get another shop that knows what they are talking about to tell you what you actually need. Unless you live in NYC or salt belt, I doubt you will need all of that actually replaced...

Ask them for each part they want replaced. Don't just replace things just because they tell you. Show them for play or cracked bushings.... There is no reason to replace an XREAS system until it leaks or no longer functioning, excessive bouncing etc.

XREAS are not cheap to replace. I have a 07 Sport that had XREAS. Now I am on Bilstein 5100s and FJ Trail Team 4x4 Springs (Not sure if they are different than the standard FJ Springs). But they are great. I have to admit, they are not the best for rock crawling or for people who spend most of their time off road. They are smooth and has a nice feel on road with occasional off road. I would swap them out, I think you can purchase shocks and springs for about $500-$600 give or take another $100. And rebuild your arms with new bushings. You'll probably end up spending $1200-$1300, if that for everything.

Do not replace the upper and lower control arms or the panhard bar until after you have installed the new shocks/struts and coils and then only if the ride is still all over the place. These are very rarely replaced and chances are you simply don't need to. The bushings are what fail in these and you could crawl underneath to look at them easily. I suspect the dealer is suggesting you replace those just to pad the order a little bit and hoping you don't know any better.

Does 7 hours of labor for the rear lateral control arms even make sense? I mean aren't those fairly simple?

They forgot to add the cost of lube for your rears but that's a deal breaker!

You can find used fj coils for under 100 bucks plus a set of shocks for about 200 or less depending on brand.

Prop, My XREAS was leaking so I swapped it out with Bilsteins and it was my first time working on the suspension. My previous experience is similar to yours. Tundra Brake swap, Fuel Injector, and drive shaft on my 99. Also, regular maint, brake pads, bleeds, spark plugs, etc.

It's not that hard. The first one took me some time but then it went pretty smooth.

All of this is bat shit crazy. You could by a complete OME 3" lift + new UCA's for under 1500 and get installed for around 500. Or get 4 5100' for 600 ish plus labor.

I'm in agreement with most to start with shocks and alignment, unless you want to lift, and see if ride has been improved.

Any advice on what spring compressor I should purchase? Or can I just run down to autozone and borrow their spring compressor. I plan on tackling this project memorial day weekend! :guitar2:

I quoted out a XREAS replacement with labor as a reference for a member a while back. Ithink at dealer pricing and labor $3.5~4k was about right for all the XREAS parts. Did they mention why you need upper and lower control arms?

you can always pay a shop 50 bucks for them to do it for you if op doesn't feel comfortable.

Yes, key thing is why are they quoting you for upper and lower arms without telling you why.
