HELP!!! Transmission or Clutch???

5 Speed Manual

This started this weekend, I could not shift into gear. Had to start in 2nd, then could shift to 5th once moving. I had the clutch replaced, fly wheel resurfaced. I've replaced both master and slave cylinder. Pedal is good also.
Replaced shifter lever bushings also.

Today after driving around town for 4 hours. I could not shift into gear, tried the starting in second and heard this horrible grinding sound. There was no popping sound prior.

Anyone ever have this problem? The shifting into gear went away for 2 days. I'm at a loss about what is causing this.

Just the basics here - sufficient fluid? My Z had similar issues (couldn't get it into reverse) and turned out to be low on clutch fluid. :cowboy:

Can you shift it with the vehicle stopped and the engine off? If it goes into all gears its the clutch. I have a feeling its the transmission

Sounds like the pedal or hydraulics aren't properly adjusted.

check slave and master for leaks. If you have a good pedal it may be inside the transmission...throw out bearing perhaps or some kind of disc failure causing a bind.

All fluids are good. When engine is off it goes through gears normally. I took it to a transmission place, they said it sounds like a bearing, because of the grinding noise that is made when trying to go into gear. Something to do with a spline???

I'm not sure I could agree with that. I don't think a bearing would prevent it from going into gear, unless it was internal to the transmission. My pilot bearing and throwout bearing were both seized (couldn't spin them by hand), but it would still go into gear.

I also discovered one of the bell housing bolts had come completely out while replacing the slave cylinder. The pilot bearing was replaced when the clutch was replaced.

Whoa really? You think it just vibrated out?

I'm not sure. I live in a small town, limited choices for mechanics. I can do most myself but trans are above my skill level.

If it will go into all the gears with the engine off then chances are your transmission is ok. Check and see if you are getting a full throw off of your clutch slave. Have somebody push the pedal while you climb under and watch. If that looks good then it is probably in the pressure plate or the disk itself which unfortunately involves pulling the trans again

Any one have input bearing issues before???
