Help with 02 fender flare gasket

I have an 02 SR5 with factory fender flares. The matching colored gasket between flare and body is in good shape, however it's starting to lose its top painted layer. Removing the flares seems to be quite the process from what little I can find on net. So instead of going that route, is there any way to remove the top painted layer on all the gaskets. I don't mind the look of the black instead of the matching color. If not, has anyone removed their flares and how much work is involved. Thanks

peel that layer off. i did it to mine and it looks better. it's easier than taking the flares off and nothing will break.
