Help With 2018 Updates

Hi! I've searched everywhere but am still struggling. I am looking to make sure my new 2018 has the latest software/navigation etc. but can't find version numbers or processes to check. I have an SR5P, which I guess is the premium Entune and am looking for 1. Entune update/software version, 2. Gracenote update process (found it online, but has a dead link), and 3. Navigation map update process.

I did the startup/power down screen changes this morning, and that was fun!

Thanks, all!

seriously though. doesnt really matter. our stock headunit/entune is a POS. with whatever update the thing is going to crash on you.

also you can download the entune app on your iphone/android and the 4R should pick it up and update it as needed or go to the dealer and have them do it.

The Entune app on my Android will provide the ability to update via Bluetooth?

I'm assuming so. there's no push function on the app itself. usually when i hop into the car it'll state it needs an update.

Why are you so adamant on updating the software? it's absolutely nothing special. navigation is horrible and if anything youre better off using Waze or google maps on your phone.
My 2010 Acura TL had a way better stock navi system than this.

if anything you should really look into a new headunit if you like that kind of stuff.
ive been eyeing pioneer headunits with apple car play but i'm waiting to see if some of these headunits will allow Waze. Apple announced it earlier this month that it'll allow 3rd party map apps to run on their apple carplay units.

oh and i wish i didnt update. my spotify only plays via bluetooth and not when its plugged in (which you get better sound quality). so i was pissed about that. i dont know if thats an apple thing or entune thing.

I've been using both Google Maps and built-in navigation, and they're usually within a couple minutes/directions of each other. Given the lack of a good place to see my phone, the built-in nav would make things easier.

Do you know if the navigation updates go through Entune/Bluetooth as well?

i'm assuming its for all. i didnt notice any significant changes to how the navi displayed. but i dont use it at all so i wouldnt be a good person to ask if there was any improvements to it.

I never used the Nav system after the free trial because it was so outdated and expensive. Over the years people here posted several threads concerning issues with function and updates. Since I rarely need the nav function I just got a Garmin with free updates that I can put in any vehicle.

jasxn you should probably take yours in to the dealership if it's that bad. serioulsy. it sounds like your headunit is defective.

while I agree it's slightly dated, mine has not crashed once. works as expected. I don't use the navigation too often, as I find Waze to be more helpful and intuitive, but I do like having the map available. everything else works as it should though.

as far as updates, I could be wrong, but I don't think the GPS/Maps update with the OTA updates. I've actually never really noticed much in regards to the OTA updates at all.

also @flyvr9 , you have to pay for nav? what was the trial all about? first I've heard of any such thing.

jasxn...are you really trying to sway a user one way or another based on your incorrect assumptions when there are tons of threads with actual answers to his questions? Especially when you admitted "I wouldn't be a good person to ask."

There are numerous threads with solutions, detailed explanations, and examples of how to accomplish all of the OP's desires. OP, try using the search function with a phrase like "5th gen entune update" or "5th gen nav update"

I'm constantly baffled why people feel the need to try to "help" a user when they don't have informed answers for them and the correct answers are readily available. This ends up just wasting people's time and can send them down an incorrect path towards their solution. But then again...here I am wasting my time being the thread police...not sure who is worse hah!

i did provide an answer to him. which was either download the entune app or go to the dealer for the latest update.
other than the typical answer most people give: "search"

i know he didnt ask me for my opinion but i just shared what i felt about the system in general. whatever update he does is not going to greatly change his experience with the entune system. if he wanted something more interactive i suggested an aftermarket headunit. also if he decides to listen to my rant great if not great.

obviously you were not going to be any help by telling him to search for his answer when usually its as simple as what i've told him in my first post.

i wouldnt be a good person to ask in reference to the navigation being updated in some way or form.

there are plenty of members here that expressed concern about their headunit restarting as i am one of those. just because you havent experienced great! im happy for you.

i have taken it to the dealer but because they cant recreate the problem to find a fix. its not broken in their eyes.

Fairly new here but I've been lurking for about 6 months...just trying to learn but yours is the second reference to the "free trial period" for the Nav system. This is my third vehicle with built in Nav and I've never heard of paying for a contract? XM or Onstar sure but not Nav. Enlighten me as I'm new to Toyotas Nav system.
I'm only a couple months in but so far I'm pretty happy with the performance, no reboots or the like. Coming from Subaru system this is an improvement.

mcarey86 - when we bought our 4Runner in Dec of 2013 it came with a 30 day trial subscription to the Entune package. It included the nav etc. After the 30 days we could subscribe and then have to pay. It deactivates if you don't A recent search resulted in a price of approx $150 for dealer installed per year. I know some here are doing their own via a few different means and I don't know that cost.

My map still works but it is not updated and route planning and turn by turn nav is not functional. It's very basic with no labeling of things other than major routes. I have also never used the phone through the head unit. It was paired to the vehicle when we took delivery. I've never used the phone while driving. If I get a call I just pull over and answer or call back.

So - I figured a stand alone nav like Garmin or one of the others, was a better fit for us. We can put it in any vehicle and the updates are free for life!

Agreed--I'm coming from a Ford Escape and have zero issues with neither the connectivity nor the sound quality of the premium audio.

Well it may take more research as to cost. Apparently Toyota dropped charges for some updates in 2016. However if they do it - they will charge you labor. If you do it via download and install then it looks like there is little or no cost. But, some things such as assistance (on-star like) etc. is not free. You would pay the provider in that case.

Hopefully the factory nav - maps - radio - head unit - phone pairing system is better than when we got ours. We didn't experience issues, but we didn't really use the system. Many that did had problems from operation to update to connectivity. Some changed out their head units to avoid these issues along with those that wanted a more robust sound and included speaker and or amp replacements as well.

If your system works and you're happy with it - great.

That's interesting. I've never heard of this at all, anywhere.

I have nav/entune and have not and do not pay any kind of yearly fee for it.

I think it may be a reference to paying service for software updates rather than a subscription to actually use the system.

No. Dealer checked nav and Entune software and said things were up to date with a new nav update due in September/October, I think.

No info on Gracenote update.
