Help with 4runner Differences?

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone knew a more comprehensive, detailed and complete information source than Edmunds for model year differences for the 4runners. I am looking to get a late model used vehicle and I need the best 4 wheel drive system. I understand things changed quite a bit in '99 but did the changes in '01 better the vehicle or make it less of an off roader (locker, no locker?). For that matter were the changes in '99 for the better (not that I truly understand the newer 4x4 system).
I dont plan to lift the truck but I dont like getting stuck.

Is that the system where the brake will stop a spinning wheel thereby transfering the power to a non-spinning wheel? (man am I technical)
If so that came out in 2000?

I found this thread but there seems to be a bit of inconsitancies in what people think.

if you're specifically looking for a 3rd gen then pick up one with a rear locker. you will be happy that you did. this means don't get the 01/02 model as they don't have it (they have their own version of the psuedo locker crap that's worthless).
