Help with AC problem please

2005 V8 4Runner. Wife tried to use the AC for the first time since we bought the truck and the air coming out of the vents on the driver side don't get cold while the passenger side vents get cold like they should. Never experienced a problem like that. Any clue on what it could be or suggestions on what to look at this weekend?

I haven't had this problem, but I think I've seen threads on it before...

If I'm remembering correctly, your refrigerant is low. Try recharging the system, it doesn't seem like it should cause your problem but it does.

i was just coming in here to say the same thing.

sounds like the charge is low. I would have it checked for a leak prior to having it recharged. it had to go somewhere...

definitely a leak somewhere, you are low on gas. most leaks on the 05 i have seen are from the evaporator...ouch, hope yours would be an easier leak

Yes. It's a weird symptom but recharging seems to be the common solution.

As mentioned, you might look for leaks too; the refrigerant had to go somewhere.

Agreed, it's just low refrigerant. Of course test for leaks but it may not have one. Sure it has to go somewhere but a miniscule leak can lose enough over many years not to be an issue.

I have never seen or heard of a low charge level causing the cold air to be mis-routed. The evap is all one unit and not side dependent.

Does it have auto climate control where each side can be adjusted separate?

Can't adjust each side separately Toyo.

Going to find an independent shop to recharge with dye. Dealership here wants $260+!!! To hell with that. If the problem comes back I'll go from there to trace a leak. Thanks everyone

Out of curiosity I looked up the evaporator on rockauto. Denso is $87....and a dealership wants around $1200-1500 to change it out?!?!?!?!

the evaporator is stashed under the glovebox, you gotta take the dash apart to get access to it...about 8 to 10hrs labour...a big pita!
same thing happened to me, a recharge gave me cold air from both vents...its a known issue on most toyotas........tech said i have a leak on my evap, another said compressor seals......tried the quick seal pro kit...3wks after, my compressor locked up, makes a groaning sound, when trying to engage. so ordered for a new compressor, evaporator, dryer, condenser, expansion valve from rockauto...

I would still see if there's any codes in the HVAC system before I pulled the evaporator out. Don't use the normal OBD plug, the HVAC system has it's own diagnostic program.

The diagnoistic mode gave me a no problem code, either 00, or 01 cant rememeber.............wonder why it gave me such a code then when i was most def low on refrigrant?..
would it give a code for leaking evaporator???? or a leak in the systyem?

I bet money it's the evaporator core that's leaking. I had the same symptoms as yours around this time last year on my old 2004 V6. I took it to a Toyota where they found the leak coming from the evaporator. They wanted $1,700 to replace it.

Recharging your HVAC system will only be a temporary fix as your leak will eventually get worse. The first time I recharged it with the leak, the left side vents went warm again after roughly 4 months. The second time I recharged it, they went warm again after 2 months.

You have to suck it up and replace that evap core. This should be a common issue along with stuck brake calipers and cylinder 6 misfires.

I don't think it's that common myself, 180K and mine's fine but FL people probably use it lot more than those of us in northern states. Only way to know for sure is to test it and let us know the results.

I still can't seem to wrap my brain around the fact that a system low on freon will blow 2 different air temps at the same time.

I'm with you on that. Probably taking it to get filled and dye put in Thursday or Friday since I've already got a couple days off
