Help with knock sensor

Hi guys, I have a 1992 4runner, 2.4L 4WD with 178,000 miles. Last week my check engine light came on and I got it checked out, it was a faulty knock sensor. My mechanic friend cleaned it up and the light turned off and she drives like she did before the light came on. I was wondering whether I should just switch out the sensor or leave it as is. Any advice is helpful. Thanks!

I've had the same issue on my 94. Short answer would be you will need to change it probably, eventually. It is tough to access the sensor however because it is located in the engine block. What do you mean when you say your mechanic friend cleaned it up?

not sure about the 4 cly, but the v6 "3.slow" has the knock sensor located on the block between the two cylinder heads underneath the intake manifold and plenum. they are notorious for being fine and throwing a code because the wire that goes from the sensor to the plug on the wire harness above the intake manifold is bad. either way it requires removing quite a bit to access the sensor. i would recommend replacing both wire and sensor at the same time. if you dont want to spend 150 dollars on a sensor and wire go to your local salvage yard and pull a knock sensor of a newer v6 (all yota v6 use the same sensor, only the plug varies on some so make sure to grab the wire and plug as well). i did this on mine and it runs fine.
