Help with picking a mechanical buffer/polisher

You have to read up on the G110....it actually has a new feature where it will maintain speed as the load increases. I've used it and it works very well. I'm not sure about the forced rotation thing you're talking about, but I tried my best to stop my machine with a loaded up pad and it just kept going. Actually, it barely even slowed down until I pressed much harder than I would when buffing a car. So it seems pretty good to me.

You are correct, it is very hard to stop the G110v2 and the GG. That is because of the power of these machines, but they do not have forced rotation. They are very close in power. The only worth difference is the warranty. Again, they are both very good machines and a better bang for the buck then the Flex.

In my opinion, ' more power' is a poor choice for picking a da, within reason. I use a PC, and have used others. Really any machine above the $100 mark will be fine. You want something that is smooth and comfortable to hold. Neither you nor the machine is doing the actual work, so there should be no reason you are pressing hard enough that you need more power.

As far as products go, I've specifically used menzerna products and they are amazing. For black and red cars, I recommend blackfire products, they are designed for those two colors. In general, klasse aio is a great product, but I use p21s as a final layet instead. Here's a secret, p21s (for cars) and s100 (for motor cycles) are the same product, but s100 is cheaper and easier to get. Your local harley dealer probably has it in stock.

The machine itself will apply approx 7 lbs of pressure. For nice results you need to keep the pad flat. This will take approx 10 lbs of pressure. When you need to correct color or remove surface defects you will need to apply up to 20 lbs of pressure on the pad.

All of the first gen polishers (PC, Meg and GG) have been redesigned with more POWER because they would stop when the pad was saturated with product and/or more pressure was applied. You would need many pads and have to change them frequently.

The power of the machine dictates the amount of time required to achieve set results. It also can limit the degree of correction or defects that can be fixed.

Speaking strictly from my own experience, an orange pad on a porter cable set to 3 with an aggressive polishing compound is more than enough to remove swirls. I haven't burned through any clear coats, but one could pretty easily with the above setup.

If others have found that any if the good da's stopped while using them, who an I to argue with that? It's just never happened to me.

So the real question is this-- how much power do you need? Like I said, I'm unable to stop my machine, even under the worse possible conditions....it just keeps going and going.

I don't know much about the others, but the V2 Megs machine was designed with "cruise control"....basically it will respond to increased load/pressure and keep the pad speed constant. So I don't really think it needed more power, it just needed a way to adjust to increased loads to maintain speed.

I've heard nothing but good things about all three. No complaints of stopping (not like the first gen). The difference between them as far as performance is the time savings. GG needing less time. Also, if someone is in the market the GG is less expensive, has more power (faster results) and a lifetime warranty.

I still recommend the Flex, if you are willing to pay double.

Fair enough...but another thing to consider is safety. What I mean by that is when someone who is new to polishing a car with a machine....I'd always recommend a machine that can help keep them out of trouble. That's one of the reasons why I purchased a DA instead of an orbital.

A DA is orbital, you mean circular/rotary.

Yeah, meant to say rotary. The DA is on an eccentric, so it does a little bit more than just go around in perfect circles

Just standing too long and I'm in pain. I have to use a mechanics stool to do the sides of the vehicle. The Flex really helps by cutting the time required, love this machine.
