Help with Smoking Issue

Hey guys,

Just started up my 4runner and it had a difficult time starting on the first turn of the key (never happened before). Turned the key again and the truck fired up. Started to drive down the road and notice a big cloud of smoke coming from the exaust. Pulled over and went straight back home. The 4runner has a rebuilt 22re with around 40k milles on it. The smoke was white with medium thickness and did not smell. What could be going on?

White "smoke" is generally steam from coolant in the combustion chambers. You can check your oil for pastyness or look at the coolant levels and such, but I'd skip all that. Get down to the parts store, borrow a compression tester, and buy a block test kit. If the block test comes back negative and the compression is good on all cylinders, have a hard look under your timing cover for broken timing chain guides.

I just changed the oil with synthetic oil less then 1k miles ago. I still need to change my coolant cause I want to flush and use the Toyota "Red" fluid cause I got some green sh** in there right now. I'm pretty sure everything else is fine fluids wise.

I'll check block and under the timing cover and get back to you!

Little update..I'm yet to test the compression of the cylinders as I plan to do that tomorrow, but I started the truck up again today and it fired no problem. However, there does seem to be quite a bit of liquid coming from the exaust pipe while the truck is at idle. Could this indicate something different?

Lotta things cause water out the exhaust pipe. Could be because you didn't take it up to temp the last time you had the truck running, could be a bad head gasket. You need a block test. Here's one brand: Block Tester - Blown Head Gasket Test by Test Tools

Water is a byproduct of combustion, so some is normal.
If the exhaust has a sweet smell that is another indication of coolant.
