I do have a thing going on in the electronics forum with additional pics, if any of you 9Xers want to see me fail in my audio installation

OK first question : Did any of you replace the fuel tank on one of these, either on your own or through some service dept. I have gotten estimates on the job and the most expensive is the local dealer with 600$ yikes!, a Toyota specialized shop asks 465$ and a fuel tank/radiator shop says they will do it for 375$. This is Canadian $ by the way. These prices vary way too much, so what gives ?

The gas tank problem
Well, it leaks !
The smell gets to you after a while
Whith a full tank, gasoline drips at about a drop every 5 seconds into a niiiice puddle on the ground. I'm down to 2/3 a tank now and there is no puddle anymore, no dripping either, just the smell.
Looks like the leak is on the seam at the top of the tank, passenger side and 3/4 way towards the tail. This is relatively new ( got the truck last week ) because it is dripping tar from a rustproofing treatment as well as gas. The gas dissovles the tar and everything comes down on the pavement, if the leak was older, the tar would already have come down.
I gotta get under there this weekend to srape/wipe off the tar and try to get that area relatively clean for a better look and maybe try a spray-on sealant of some kind. If that fails, its going to get a new tank.
I do like to fiddle with my cars but I will NOT be the one that will remove these 14-year-old-never-removed-had-every-winter-in-canada-outside-in-the-snow-and-salt bolts that hold the tank and skidplate. Maybe if I had an acetylene torch, but even the I would not take it near a leaking fuel tank.
The weird red-box thing is a Honda Element, brand new I might add. My neighbour sells those for a living to ruin the scenery, along with civics to ruin everyone's driving experience.
Hehe, dont get me wrong Hondas a great cars, its just that civic drivers tend to have their baseball caps at a weird angle, wear their sunglasses at night and generally think they are piloting a Mig-22 or some other dogfighting machine.

Anywho thats about it, dont worry if I turn out weird phrases, I'm not a native anglophone.

If you can get at the leak, maybe try some JB WELD to fill it? It's like a polymer bondo that sticks to metal. Otherwise, the new tank sounds like a good thing- although I can't help you with prices.

The gas tank issue has been put on hold until the tank gets empty, I'll decide then if it gets a replacement or a band-aid. I'm currently tied up in an audio installation, those of you who are considering putting some sound in a 9x runner might want to have a look at my MONOLOGUE in the electronics forum thread

It is the hose that runs along with the filler neck...they both go into the top of the tank......I smelled fuel really bad near the rear passenger door....Fill it full then look at the top of the tank where the two lines enter the tank.....you can change this hose without pulling the tank...its tight, but can be done...I hope this is your problem..alot cheaper than $400.....When you take off the gas cap..you should hear air releasing? I didn't.....once I replaced the line...everything is good.

What I did do is test the rust removal capabilities of a 10600 RPM angle grinder, and I have to say it beats anything I have tried up to now. This is terrifying tool. I shut it off out of remorse after 5 minutes of (very satisfying) operation.
I live in a residential area, stacked pretty tight, and taking the angle grinder out while the neighbours are out grilling steaks on their BBQs and their kids are practicing hollies makes me feel really really evil, that ting is LOUD.
What do you guys do when you just have to make a whole lot of noise ? Do you just warn the neighbours ? Are you aware of joints that rent a parking space with an electrical outlet and a license to grind ?

I love my angle grinder! I used to check with the closest ones to find a time when they were out. Then grind away!
