Heres an other one for you 4wd guys

I recently posted about my 4wd not working. It would only engage sometimes, but never when I wanted it too. I tried everything, but its still is doing the same thing.
One thing I (think) have noticed though is that the 4wd will engage no problem, on and off as many times as I want when the truck is cold. Once I drive for a significant amount of time and the truck heats up; the 4wd wont work at all until the truck cools down.
Any ideas? I'm pretty desperate hahaha.

I have a 97 limited.

Have you changed your Transfer Case fluid recently?

I don't remember the last time it was done. Ill change it this weekend. See if that helps.

Well I was just checking.....going to make sure you had some in there, what type you used....etc. I can't say that is your problem but metal expands when it gets hot and not having clean fluid or enough could possibly let it get hot enough to not engage but then at that point you may have alot more things going wrong than 4wd not engaging.

The first thing I would do is take the fill plug off and check the level. If that is fine then I'd get some gear oil and change the fluid. You can't go wrong by doing this and if you don't know when it was changed then I'd def give that a whirl. Could be the cheapest fix you ever make.

Drive it in a straight line, no gas pedal, no brakes, no turning and then press the button. It should go in fine. Same way to take it out. This was suggested to me by another member in another post. It works great and it works everytime IF you follow these guidelines.

First, describe exactly what transmission you have. Manual, Auto w/J-handle w/button, no button, etc.

Second, problem is either front diff or t-case. Front propeller shaft should turn freely by hand wheel in 2WD and lock up in 4H and 4L. Does yours? If it does, problem is in front diff ADD. If not, it's in t-case.

Do that, and we can start to nail it down. [But just for fun, check the vacuum check valve between the front of the manifold and the ADD VSV's on the drivers inside fenderwall. It's a $3 plastic part that can easily cause this. Also, check all the vacuum hoses. ]

Thanks, I know how it works. It just doesn't seem to work when the truck warms up. It works fine when the truck is just started.

cj80. Ill check it tonight, I might as well just change the fluid. I have an appointment friday to get it looked at. Its just driving me crazy because I just dont know why haha.
