Hesitation under acceleration from stop

Good to know, I’ll try messing with it a bit tonight and see if it changes at all. Thank you everyone for all the suggestions and insight, much appreciated!

Well just tried adjusting the cables around a bit and makes no difference at all. I think I’m gunna try to see if it still happens if I lock it into L vs 2 vs D.. that should really tell me wether it’s the transmission or not I’m thinking.

Edit: seems like it only happens in 2 and D not in L so I’m now suspecting the shift solenoid. Finally a potential clue!! Lol.. Do I replace all 3 or try to figure out which is the one that is causing the trouble?

If it was me, I would replace all the solenoids and install a transgo shift kit when I had the pan off. I'd also use a felpro gasket for the trans pan instead of the sealant. That stuff is a bear to get off.

Have any of you with the problem ever watched your LTFT when it happens?

How old are your O2 sensors?

Haven’t watched LTFT but my 02 sensors are practically brand new. Going to try my transmission solenoids and maybe the transgo kit.

Seems like there are two shift solenoids and one over drive solenoid, found the number for the shift solenoids (180$ each.. ouch) but can’t find the number for the overdrive solenoid.. thinking about doing the transgo kit, I think there are two kits for our transmission (sk340 vs 340hd2) seems like the sk340 might be less race car like but everyone that I’ve seen do the install used the 340hd2.. hmm.

How old is your TPS? That runs the whole show from gear selection to kicking down to fuel and ignition timing maps.

There's a write up on the 340hd2 kit: Transgo 340-hd2 install and reveiw The 340hd2 kit has 2 ways you can modify the valve body. Either truck or race shifts with truck being softer than race shifts. You might try asking the OP what he thinks of it since it's been a few years on his install.

Saw that one, there is a pretty detailed write up on Tacoma world as well. I just wish someone had a review of the sk340. I might call transgo and just see what they say about it/recommend. Probably try to message OP as well just to see what he says.

Brand new oem toyota with less than 500 miles on it.

My 2001 had the same issue. Cleaned the maf and hooked it up to a multimeter and everything was within spec's. I ordered "returned" maf on amazon hooked it up to a multimeter and it behaved differently than my old one.

I put it in the car and symptoms resolved. Definitely try a new maf.

Only reason I’m hesitant on getting a new MAF is because my buddy let me borrow his and it didn’t change a thing.. Also my testing procedure of shifting into different gears really narrowed it down IMO, it wouldn’t happen at all when it was stuck in 1st gear.. I ordered 2x shift solenoids (the over drive solenoid was $$$) and the transgo kit. Really hoping this does the trick.

Did you ever figure out the difference between the two transgo kits? Which kit did you end up going with?

I ended up just going with the one that everyone else went with 340hd2. Kind of want to supercharge it someday anyways so figure the HD kit is probably the way to go.

Welp I got the supercharger installed but still haven’t been able to figure this problem. Shift solenoids didn’t fix it. I did find a bad shift solenoid when I replaced them though. Kind of thinking it’s the tps or the wiring to the tps. Either that or the ECU.

Edit: I’ve narrowed it down a little, it only happens between 1st-2nd gear shift (roughly 1500 rpm) when coming out of a stop. If I put the auto shifter into L (1st gear) it will not do the hesitation. Kind of leaning toward this being something with my ECU or throttle body/throttle position sensor or the wiring for them. It’s pretty consistent and repeatable. Thinking about taking it to the dealer for diagnostic but I know that can be questionable.

This has been plaguing me for a while. When I do a rolling stop/stop very shortly and accelerate i get a slight hesitation. It revs for a split second then it seems like it dies a little then picks right back up. If I do a full stop and wait a second it won’t do it. Ive done quite a bit of maintenance on this thing so I have a decent head start on narrowing this down hopefully.. i try to stick with oem toyota parts where I can.

Any suggestions/recommendations would be helpful!

2000 limited 5vzfe 184k miles no CEL and drives 100% fine except for this issue.

Here’s the relevant things I’ve done so far:
Replaced:
-plugs/wires
-fuel filter
-air filter
-timing belt (eBay kit Tim recommended)
-valve cover gaskets/pcv
-automatic transmission solenoids (all 3)
-throttle position sensor (got a CEL to replace this)

Cleaned/rebuilt/tested:
-cleaned/rebuilt injectors (eBay kit)
-cleaned/swapped/tested MAF
-cleaned/tested IAC
-cleaned throttle body/intake manifold
-coil packs tested per FSM
-cleaned electrical connections on TB/MAF/TPS
-over drive/ect have no effect on this problem

Did you ever solve this problem? I can’t figure it out.

Bumping this thread. I have an 02 with same issue. From a dead stop you have to take it easy or you will think you have a clutch and you let it out to fast. I have changed my TPS, which helped some but still have that hesitation. I cleaned my MAF last week and no help. I was going to go the solenoid route next as well. Has anyone tested the ECU theory? Mine also does not like the cold weather but the TPS helped out a lot with it being sluggish when cold. Very interested on what others have tried outside of what has been listed. Runs like a champ once it gets into 2nd gear. Would take it anywhere. Just crazy that no one can seem to figure this out. Went to a local transmission shop and they said I needed a new transmission. Not ready to throw in the towel yet and go thaat route. Happy to see others have same issue and have been trying the same thing.
