I know this is not helpful, but from my place in Canada, you can't spend that much on a 3rd Gen.
What are your importation regulations?
185000 miles, 96 Ltd (e locker) $2679 USD. It won't have all that pollution crap on it either.
my 96 Ltd still reaches 160 km/h (100 mph) fairly quickly, for a Toyota anyway.

I appriciate the links from Canada but I dont think I would be able to get it registered in California too easily with out the smog stuff!

Ya that's where the guy who sold me mine got me. I wanted both so highlander edition or limited was about my only options and even then they didn't all have both and I looked and looked and finally got lucky. Plus it had an SC that only has been on 20k of its 120k life. Add in a lot of the other goodies he had on it, lift, etc. and let's just say things landed significantly north of $10k. He knew what he had and my cash helped a bit but bluebook goes out the window when you start getting picky...which I am.
I accidentally referred to ATRAC when I was thinking about the 2001-2002 Vsc/TRAC systems. I was under the impression that TRAC was very similar to ATRAC though, I'm not actually sure of the difference.
If someone is bored, let me know what you think of that blue sport I linked a few posts up in Santa Barbara. Outside looks promising, interior is clean bit the carpets look a little suspicious, like there could have been water in there?

Well, good and bad news.. I got more pictures and information about the 207k mile sport.

- 207k miles
- Hood, roof and rear tailgate fender flares was repainted because clear was gone
- It is an Arizona vehicle
- It has been in 2-3 accidents according to carfax reported early in its life
- The vehicle was able to drive away from all accidents, didnt have to be towed
- All of the vin numbers are still on every panel
- It looks pretty clean overall
- Not a lot of service history that I can gather
- They did get the lower ball joints replaced by toyota recall.
- 1 Trans fluid change at 202k miles from 3rd owner
- Looks rust free
- Brand new no name tires..
Having a hard time pondering if I should take the 300 mile trip to go see it. Really curious what you guys think. Price is at $7900, they are willing to negotiate a little. Everything else I am finding close is like 10k+ and appears in worse condition.

Go with 5k cash. 200k is a fair amount of miles. Act like you don't want it, "it'd just be a toy", be willing to walk away. Thw west coast seems to command higher prices for these trucks. I stole my 1 owner garaged 98 with 110k for $1500, I never get that lucky.
I'd be willing to travel for one for the right price, but 300 miles is pushing it.

Bring up the 3 wrecks in negotiation. Negotiate as much as you can and when they start saying they can't go lower then bring up "well with 3 accidents on record it's hard to justify your price" and there isn't much rebuttal to that. If they keep going about price I just kind of flip the script on them and say well can I trade in a car with 3 wrecks on it and get over value for it from here? If so then let me get it for you.

Yeah, I am sure they have quite a bit of money into it at this point. Wish I wasn't having such a hard time locating one to purchase, would make passing on this a lot easier.
Lowest they will go is 7k.

$7k isn't bad from a dealer and it is the newest 3rd gen you can get and in a pretty rare color. Seems worth considering. I have a limited so it's a power moon roof and not just the glass that doesn't move. Idk if both options were available or not TBH

Well just got done looking at it, didn't buy it. Looked in decent shape but it just felt.. loose. How would you guys describe the feedback you get driving an automatic 4Runner? This was my first real test drive and everything just felt mushy to me. Steering, acceleration and handling. Reminded me of driving an old 90s American sedan. I was expecting a more solid feel.
Pretty bummed out!

Drive a few more. Just remember it is a 20ish year old SUV and not a Vette.
I have a 97 SR5 auto. The steering is pretty tight. It has a slight vibration in the wheel at speed that I haven't figured out yet. Nothing major and just enough to be noticeable if your looking for it. After new plugs, wired and fuel filter the acceleration has greatly improved as well as being much stronger going up mountain passes. I have a 3" toytec lift on it and it handles remarkably well. I also added some 1.25" spacers to widen the stance a bit. I can lean it into a corner and never feel like it's out of control but I have always driven fast and been hard on my rigs.
If you ever make it to the east side of the Sierra's hit me up with a PM. I'm in Bishop and would be happy to let you take it around the block a few times.

I was trying to keep that in the back of my mind, it's older. But my 1988 pickup feels much tighter. I do keep up the maintenance but it's still on original control arm bushings and ball joints! My Tacoma feels completely different, it's only 4 years newer, and 115k miles.
Im curious how much an older 4runner would tighten up with all new suspension, bushing and steering parts. Still not sure if that would of fixed the sloppy accelerator/transmission/drivetrain feel.
I have never owned anything but Toyota trucks so I don't think I'm coming at this driving feel from the wrong point of view, like it would be if I was coming out of that vette

If it felt loose it probably was. The only way to really tell would be to bring a floor jack with you and do the normal checks for rack, rods, and bj's. I have the rack bushings I just need to install them. There's also a rack guide install thread around here somewhere that I'll use to replace the guide. I'm hoping that gets rid of the vibration. Like I said, it's really minor, but I'm a perfectionist with my rigs.
Everything else on the front end is super tight. If it's not the rack causing it it's the tires or the driveline. I'm going for the narrow it down by the cheapest solution first approach.
As far as the offer, your welcome. If you climb or fish this place is more than worth the drive. It's got a tiny bit of off-road action as well. lol
