There's a reason Ford wasn't taken, lol

Deckplate mod....just do a search

one thing that many people do not think to check is wheels and alignment. when i got mine i was getting 16 at best. i brought my truck in to have my brakes checked because of some noises and it turned out all 4 of my rims are bent! after new rims and an alignment i was all set. my frame might be a little tweaked though :wtf:

You buy it like that? Should've got a carfax!

Remove the radiator cap and then slide the 4Runner out and slide a Honda Civic under, replace radiator cap. Increased MPGs!

Hate to be a smart alec, but you just aren't going to see much gas milage out of these. Best thing you can do is regular tune-ups, check tire pressure, resist the mod bug, and drive like a grandmother... and get excited about 18mpg!

This is pretty much true.

that sucks, my ford give me 12-15 mpg, since it has 6'' fabtech lift kit, with 35'' tires. but thanks for the advice.

my last road trip I got 24 mpg. 18 average around town.

I have not done a road trip yet with the new rubber on the ground that is an inch taller.
and I did the ISR mod (dont feel it did anything)

dont feel I am getting the same now, but will report later once I get a few tanks burned.

Carfax wouldn't necessarily indicate damaged wheels.

There are a LOT of situations that Carfax lacks in. Say for example, guy backs out of a parking lot stall, and both parties involved agree to work things out

A: Don't get the police involved
B: Didn't involve insurance

This happens quite frequently.

With regards to the OP, don't do jackrabbit starts, when approaching an intersection, throw it in neutral and coast to a stop. Cruise at about 2400ish RPM on the freeway.

excited about 18? wow i get between 16 and 18 in mine with a lift 33x12.5 tires and heavy bumpers front and rear.....and on occasion a serious case of road rage :uzi:

Best way to increase gas mileage is to slow down. 70+ I get 17-18. 60-65 I can get ~20. On a long vacation/cross country trips I would notice the difference between interstate speeds and slower 2 lane highways. You basically trade time for money :D

Best way to improve mpg: Driving habits

Sweet spot for these trucks is between 59 and 62 on stock gears and tires.

Every mile per hour over 62 and you are losing about 0.2 miles per gallon. So if you are getting 20mpg at 62mph, you will be getting 18.4mpg at 70mph or 17.4mpg at 75mph.

Drive like grandma, coast to stoplights, speed up slowly, keep the rpms between 1500 and 3000 under normal operation.

Deckplate Mod - I'm not sure if you will get better mpg, but your engine "might" breath better...

Smaller tires, slower speeds. If you put small (and skinny) tires on the truck, you will ba able to increase fuel economy at slower speeds (move sweet spot to 55 mph). This might allow you to get low 20s consistently.

Valence - You can play around with several variables that increase aerodynamic drag. Although I have never heard of it being applied to 4Runners, you could attach valences to the areas under the radiator and under the running boards, as well as install hub caps that mount flush to the level of the tires. You can also increase the size of the rear air deflector and position it to channel air behind the truck more efficiently. Remove roof rack.

I know a gentleman who has made a fiberglass hull on the back of his Toyota pickup (looks like an inverted boat belly) as well as valences and other modifications to reduce weight and drag. He is getting 30+ miles per gallon.

Bottom line is... is can be done, but you will really have to go all out to see much improvement.

Keep your truck stock height and tires/rims, never go above 2,500 RPM, keep proper inflation of tires and you should be good. I'm getting over 20mpg every tank - today my fuel light went on when I hit 309 miles, I filled my tank with 15.1 gallons at $3.63 per gallon.

I too believe the DP/ISR mod does nothing for fuel economy (or anything else for that matter).

I was going to give the smarta$$ reply of "park it and get a Honda" but I see someone beat me to it.

Serious answer: What is your MPG now? Because one thing you have to do is be realistic. If you have an auto tranny and 4x4, 20 - 21 is the best you're going to see and that is only under ideal conditions on the highway. 16 - 19 is normal around town.

With a 5 speed you can do slightly better.

The other thing I would ask is: What method are you using to check your MPG? The only really accurate way is to fill your tank up every time you put gas in it, ideally using the same pump at the same station. Then divide miles driven by gallons to fill the tank.

Also, how are you measuring miles driven? If you're just using your odometer, be aware that they are often "off" by a noticeable amount (3 - 5 %) which can affect your MPG calculations.

Muddskipper has gone through 5 tanks so far, and this is what she's getting.

22.31
21.65
24.52
21.25
21.60

Averageing about 14-15 gallons per fill up, and and anywhere between 312-328 miles per fill up. :wow:

Other than what has already been mentioned, mods etc.

Keep tires properly inflated preferably with Nitrogen.
Use 100% Synthetic oil and you can use a lower viscosity if you do.

For instance my wifes Lexus ES300 is supposed to use 5w30 with petroleum based oil, however with high quality synthetic with high ZDDP we use 0W20.
The car gets 26-27mpg with the 5W30 and up to 31mpg with the 0W20 synthetic.

Also use 100% synthetic gear lube.

Not to mention it is a good idea to use 100% synthetic anyway as you never have to worry about sludge.

Increase MPG

Also learning how to be conservative on the gas pedal. On the first tank I got about 280 miles on 17 gallons. After easing up on the gas pedal and cruising at 65-70 MPH on the freeway I can squeeze out 320 miles with 1/3 of them city miles.

Myabe my "around town" has alot more stop and go then you guys on here, Im getting 13 around the city and thats while driving like a old man.
:sobbing:

Be happy with your 16 guys thats not that bad for a truck this size.
