HID 3rd Gen

I've been wanting to put HID's in my 2000 Limited for quite some time but never could justify the $300 price tag (that's a lot of beer for a college kid). But after doing some research and having a reference from a friend, I found a site that has dual beam HIDs for $118 SHIPPED. I ordered them Monday and they came in today (I'm in NC, they came from CO). I got the 8000k 35 watt set.

wow this isn't even worth a write up or pictures. Anyone could install these in under 45 minutes. I've installed electronics for years but this is super easy. The only modification was to the rubber boot around the headlight. It won't fit around the HIDs so I had to trim away just a little. Other than that I had to mount the two ballasts, a relay, ground 2 wires, and connect one to the battery positive. Every thing else is plug and play.
 
I'm interested in purchasing an HID kit soon as well, how are you liking it? I'm not sure what color to get.. I want it bright though, any suggestions? Oh, and did you disable the DRLs?
 
I got the 8000ks and honestly I haven't gotten a chance to drive at night yet (just put them in this morning). A friend of mine has this exact same set and his are super bright. He only has the single beam and I got the dual beam. I have not disabled the DRLs just yet but I'm probably going to. I'll be driving tonight and I'll post back and let you know what I think.
 
Let me know wassup! If you could get some pictures that would be great. Installation seems really easy. I might just get them since i'm getting paid next week! :driving:
 
Keep in mind the higher kelvin rating the lower the output. so 4500k is the brightest, 6000k is dimmer, 8000k is dimmer than 6000k and so on. Also I know of a place where you can get a Bi-xenon (hi/lo) HID plug and play kit for $74.44 shipped to your door. The company is located in san diego and you can pick them up for free making it $64.95 out the door. The company is DDM Tuning and the kit is the raptor series. They are assembled in china (as are all PnP kits) I am currently running 12 sets and haven't had a single problem. Also, the ballasts are digital so they will be about half as thick as the ones that tarheel posted.

I went with the 8000ks because I had seem then in a friends car and they were bright enough for what I was doing. I debated going to the 6000k but really just wanted an upgrade from the factory. I've got to do a little adjusting on my headlights (they were already not aligned correctly) and then I'll take some pictures!

Just went to the warehouse and picked up a the DDM 35w 8000k set, but its not the Raptor brand. :upset:
I'm hoping its just as good, putting them in tomorrow. 90 bucks out the door for the dual high/low H4 kit.

how're you liking the kit,tarheeltp17?

I don't like them... I'm absolutely in love with them. I'm looking to do my fog lights next. As far as the "blue" look... unless I'm color blind the 8000ks I have barely have a blue tint to them.
 
8000K Is a bluish white, I'm running 6000K which is mostly white, then 4500 K is a slightly yellow white, and 3000K is Yellow. Like I said I'm usd to the 6000K so to me 800 looks blue:)

mistaj0hnny - If you didn't get the raptor kit you must have upgraded to a "better" kit from DDM. Were they out of stock or something?
 
I think the guy at the counter offered the Raptor brand at first and then I asked what he'd suggest and told me about the DDM one and I just went with it, lol.
I just installed them today, waiting for the night to come to test these babies out. Also disabled my DRLs.
 
Huh...until I kept reading about you guys disabling your DRLs I didn't even know that the 3rd GEN had DRLs even as an option...apparently my '99 didn't get them :dammit:

Oh well, that's one less thing I have to deal with when I put the ol' HIDs in.

In your opinions, how good are either of your HID kits that you got? I'm still shopping around, until I read that you guys picked a set up for between 75 and 115 the cheapest, and highest quality (dual beam) ones I could find have been for $220!

Paid $90 for my DDM set. Not too bad so far, I'm satisfied. No huge flaws yet.
The 8000k's are very bright! But I'm still getting used to them, I'll let you know how they are in a couple days.

Holy glare batman! Did you make sure to adjust your headlights so you aren't blinding everyone as much? The first thing I noticed after installing mine was that the road signs lit up like crazy. This isn't a good thing, it means that you are throwing loads of extra light all over the place, I adjusted my headlights and it made a huge difference.

Here is some pics of mine, keep in mind this was before I adjusted them and added casper shields, so they are still rather glarey. Also I did my fogs too, it actually makes a big difference.

Got a link on how to adjust the headlights? And the fogs look good, I may do that later down the line.
Oh and what are the benefits with the casper shield? Less glare? Would you recommend them?
 
The casper shield is used for less glare, your DDM kit should have come with one pre installed. I don't know of any write-ups on the adjustment of headlights that are 4runner specific. I will try to take some pictured of the bolt you have to turn to adjust the headlight assembly.
