Finally threw in some HID projectors after driving by candlelight since buying the T4R. Also tried my hand at the Satoshi grill mod. Both were very straight forward and knocked it all out in about 8-10 hrs, most of which was waiting for paint to dry enough to handle.
For the HIDs, I went with the new morimoto D2S 5.0’s from The Retrofit Source along with Osram Xenarc Night Laser bulbs. The projectors fit perfectly and aligned immediately when I tightened the lock but on the backside. Only trimming I had to do was cutting off the flat bottom of the Apollo 2 Flat shrouds with my Dremel. Took all of 2 minutes.
The assembly opened quickly after baking for 8 min at 260. The morimoto sealsplitters always make short work of prying open headlights. Definitely worth the $10 even for a single job IMO. Same for the new tool they offer to tighten the lock nut on the back of the projectors (lock ring tool). Painting was quick too since the OEM reflector is totally smooth already--just two coats of high temp paint.
Both ballasts fit nicely in the space behind each headlight. I laid a thin head of TRS’s retrorubber where the factory glue was, cooked the assembled housing agin for 8 min, then clamped it together while the butyl cooled. It was the easiest retrofit I’ve done. Only thing left is to get some black sidemarker housings. Tried to open the OEMs but it was a huge pain so I decided it wasn’t worth the effort.
Grill mod was basic. Just chopped off the crossbars with the dremel and sanded the leftover nubs with the grinder attachment. Formed some steel mesh around the backside of the grill, secured it with about a dozen zip ties, and painted it all black. Then I attached the new emblem with some JB Weld. After sitting overnight, it was ready to go.
I highly recommend doing the HIDs. Pretty inexpensive, easy to do, and makes a huge difference in visibility once the sun goes down. If you decide to give this mod a shot and need more details, just hit me up. Here are links to the products I went with:
