HIDs are driving me insane

Any ideas on why my HIDs only intermittently turn on? I had XD HIDs that just days after installation started having issues igniting. It was always one or the other bulb, but never both at the same time. I'd have to turn the lights on and off a bunch of times to get the failing bulb to ignite. After a while it got so bad that sometimes it would never turn on no matter how many times I tried, so I switched to Morimoto HIDs. They worked great for a couple months, but now I'm having the same issue. Seems to get happed more often on colder days. It's so annoying, I'm considering selling my 4Runner because I can't go back to LEDs like I had before.

Strange, I just have a pair Of Katana led from Amazon and have no issues since I got them.

Why can’t you go back to led ?

Sounds like its your HIDs and not the 4R. Maybe just bad luck with the ballasts.

Barely noticed any improvement from LED over halogens. On winding mountain highways, HIDs are the only thing I feel comfortable with.

Try checking your grounds. I believe they are important.

Been running XD HIDs since 2015, same setup, no replacements (except for the morimoto triLEDs that went back after 3 weeks..). Sounds like you may have a ballast issue, recheck all connections, maybe consider a small amount of dielectric grease on the pins in case there's something fouling the connections somewhere?

I have innovite 55w slim ballasts and bulbs in my high beams and innovite slim 35w ballasts and bulbs in my lows. They have never failed to ignite or even show signs of failing to ignite in the few months I've owned them.

Total costs to replace highs and lows less than $100.

They were recommended by another forum member.

I've had a similar issues with my XD HIDS from day one. The difference with my issue is that its always the same light - passenger side. It is very frustrating especially because it's not always apparent that both lights did not ignite. Went through all the trouble shooting and all is correctly setup. That being said, I have found that doing the following has helped limit this issue. Not leaving the lights on once I turn off the 4R. This means having to manually switch them on every time. Although an inconvenience, it's minor IMO. Adding to that, when I turn off my lights I also switch off the fogs. This means that once I start the car, I fire up the headlights alone, then, the fogs after a successful firing of both HIDs. Although anecdotal, I have found that this helps me more often than not.

Lastly, if your ride is older, 5 years or so, might want to look at a battery replacement. This one is a stretch but good routine maintenance.

Bad ballast or like I saw mentioned a bad/loose ground. Over the years throughout various vehicles and kits I’ve seen my fair share of problems and frustrations. I had to replace numerous ballasts and had a ground come loose causing flickering or igniting issues. One vehicle had a problem due to the wrong harness being used so unfortunately you have a few things to diagnose to identify what’s causing the issue.

I've been looking at these as an option - What bulb size and color for both the 55W and 35W?

I use an H7 bulb because I have alpharex pro headlights. 4300k. The 4300k from the 35w kit almost looks like halogen color (which I prefer). The 4300k from the 55w kit is pure white.

What ground contact are we talking about? like a main body contact? I have the same intermittent issue with 2 sets of my HIDS.

Did you install the relay harness?

I've been running XD HID's for over a year with their 5000k Bulbs and they always fired with no issues.

HOWEVER, when I installed their new Philips XTR V2 bulbs I occasionally get a failure to ignite. Happens maybe 1 out of 10 times I go to use the headlights.

For the record, I am no currently using the relay harness as I didn't need it prior.

I had this exact same issue with morimoto. The retrofit source warranty me a new relay harness, a new pair of igniters, new bulbs and 3 sets of ballast and still had the issue. Finally had them send me another brand ballast (hylux) and no issue, lasted for about 5 months when I bought alpharex luxx series headlights. Got rid of all wires, igniters and ballast.

That's hilarious. I tried getting a replacement from you guys for 6 weeks before I gave up and bought some Morimotos. Worst customer service ever. I will never buy anything from XD again.

Are you happy with the alpharex headlights? They're LEDs, right? How does the output compare to your morimoto HIDs?
