HIDs Illegal?

hids are illegal, the box it comes in says off road use only. but I'd ASSUME if u had a retrofit and ur lights weren't scattered all over the place he wouldn't have stopped you.

I have no idea. No I haven't driven a 2013 Tacoma and I didn't install them my self I got the runner that way.

If you do a factory projector retrofit, you may be able to squeeze by. I would think if you could prove that the projectors you used came from a vehicle that was originally equipped with a bi-xenon projector, and were installed in a manner similar to the original projector, you could possibly get by in court. You may still get pulled over by an over-zealous officer of the peace and ticketed, but if you get a good lawyer, document the mounting, adjusting, and aiming, you may be able to present your evidence in court and get the ticket dropped.

Unfortunately, in this period of high revenue enforcement by our friends with the blue and red lights, you may continue to get hassled. I think if you can make it look factory, then you may be able to get the cop to buy it, it all depends if the risk of a ticket and possible time in court is worth it to you.

TYCs ? I'll have to look those up. And for the ticket, Didn't get one, thank god. Not even a fixit ticket just a Please keep it in mind for something to fix. Trooper was really cool. Thanks
 
lol kinda funny this thread was started before the one I just started! Apparently they dont like Projectors+ HID's either in Utah prob just a picky cop for me :(
 
HIDs should be illegal everywhere. Blinding people on a regular basis should be frowned upon. If your car doesn't come with projector style lights, just do a retrofit. Yeah it costs more, but they are way better than hids. Just my $.02.

apparently thats not legal either. although I definitely agree with you on the regular HID bulbs. Cant even say how many times i've been blinded

Seriously! I did a little research and i guess some cops are getting quite smart by looking for ballasts and everything. Yikes!! The 5K's are a perfect color cause they are a pure white. but yeah i may have to try to find some 4300K or something.

I'm getting my H1s here next week, still trying to decide wether I want to play it safe with the 4300s or go for 5s

Wait, They aren't legal in Utah? Sheesh. Still gonna do it :) Did you get pulled over?
 
just a word of advice for you guys in your color choices... no vehicles that i know of come from the factory with anything over a 4500k most come with 4300k, so anything over that would technically be in violation. and 4300 is as close to natural sun light as we can get, after that you are losing visible light out put... it will only look brighter(sure it technically is, but the color contrast will actaully hurt, they will create blind spot and washouts, and wont be as good. there is a reason Acura, Lexus, BMW ect use the 4300k bulbs
 
I see people all around here (SoCal) with pink and purple headlights. One time, a Ricer had Orange, I was like really? I'm planning on getting HID's (6,000K) and I dont think they are illegal. If I dont, I'm getting a Cruiser bike... So much cheaper all the way around than my 4Runner

yeah they are illegal... if your vehicle did not come with HIDs they are illegal to instal and use on the street period.

Best thing to tell an officer is, "I have my concealed carry permit and it is in the glove compartment or where ever" Now no jumpy rookie is reaching for his gun.

But hey reaching out the window would look pretty funny, the officer would probably think so too, unless you live in LA or something. But hey if I see someone in a 4runner with their hands out the window ill honk and say HI lol.

You don't have to like stick them all the way out at a perpendicular angle :) just have your hands resting on the door so they can be seen when the officer approaches. Puts them at ease. I actually saw this on "Highway Patrol" back in the early nineties!

Not sure if you looked into it already, but TYC is a company/brand that makes aftermarket OEM style headlamps.

1999 TOYOTA 4RUNNER Headlamp Assembly

I just had to order some since my Hilux needs DOT lights. You do NOT need to buy new housings if yours aren't cut up or anything. Chances are, you just have the HID bulb in place of the original bulb.

To replace the HIDs just start from the bulb, and work your way back down the harness. You will probably see the original headlight plug and wiring pretty close by. Unplug the bulb and the extra stuff, and put a good quality bulb (H4 style? Someone correct me if I'm wrong here) into the Toyota wiring and into your headlight housing. Done. Hope that helps.

In Utah I'd consider you lucky, especially driving a modified vehicle. They apparently don't like any form of freedom there.
