HID's in 2006 sport

I'v been toying with the idea of getting HID's for a while and I'v recently started to do some more research again.

I would probably go with XenonDepot... Id rather spend a few more bucks and get a good product (and it seems like people like XenonDepot). I would do lows (H11 4300k) first and then if I had money/if it works out well I want to do the fogs (9006 3000k).

I would probably follow these instructions as it seems like they are very good.



My questions are these:

- I know that the XenonDepot hardware has changed slightly since that write-up...has anybody done a new writeup?

- Is there any info/write-ups on how to install the fogs? I assume its the same as the low beams but if a write-up exists I'd love to see it.

- Maybe I'm confused but I feel like I have read about problems with HID's melting light housing. Is heat output something I should worry about with XenonDepot kits? (seems like this might pertain more to the fogs than the low beams?)

Everything is plug and play. Its not hard at all. You dont need to worry about your housing melting. I have HIDs in both my headlights and fog lights. Never had an issue with either.
 
i have them in a 2008 model and well lets just say if I knew about what issues there would be I would have gone with a retofit myself which is currently being worked on

first the bulbs I had received were out of focus big time. Second they didnt fit well at all in the factory housing.It had a thin piece of metal that would lock in there and it was awful. One bulb on the first set ended up dieing the red and black with crossing and touching.

Got replacement set

This time they were plastic housings that locked in. bulbs still dont lot in tight you can see one side when hitting bumps every now and then vibrating. Again the focus isnt not very good.

Im actually going to do a retrofit and not have to worry about the kits anymore. some have good results some have not. make your own choice
 
I havnt really looked into a whole retrofit...seemed like because the 2006 already has projectors it was just easier to get a kit. What parts are you using to do the whole replacement?

Also another question just came to mind...

In runnerRons write-up someone brings up the point that 200something-2005 fogs are projector while 2006 they changed them to reflectors? can anybody elaborate?

Retro-Quik: Toyota 4Runner (06-09)

better cut off better output and all you have to do is open the lense and drop them in. I would do a full blown retro but I just dont have the time with work and rarely being home
 
I've have/had both drop-in HIDS + the Quik Retro's (current).

The drop-in HID's like xenondepot sells work well, but you won't get the cut-off from an HID projector like the TRS stuff. You can modify the "squirrel finder" tab inside the stock 4runner projector to get a better cutoff, and not blind people... but at that point you are already cracking open the headlights and you might as well do the retrofit.

I'll try to snap some pics of my retrofit'd lights sometime this week and post it up. The hardest part of the retrofit was the wiring (just figuring out the routing).

IMO -- I'd wait till TRS does another big sale, I def. wouldn't have bought them at full retail price. I waited till the Black Friday sale.
 
I have the morimoto plug and play h11 kit from TRS and absolutely love it. I've been very happy with the quality, and the light output. They also work well in the stock projectors. I have done a retrofit on my other car, and am very familiar with both styles.

I have drop in TRS morimoto kits in both my lows and fog lights. They work fine, but I just bought the Retro-quik setup because I want to get rid of my high beams and they have a 15% off sale right now.

No idea what code2 is talking about with his out of focus bulbs.

Drivers side put out a fair amount of even light across the cut off and down as oppose the the bulb in the passengers which did not it was noticeably dimmer on light output and it looked more like a beam where all the light was in one spot thus it wouldn't spread even across the whole cut off, you could actually see the light concentrated in one area while driving.

And yes the bulb was seated fine and correctly. Now here is where it got fun if you turn the bulb as if you were removing it then the light filled across the cut off as it was suppose to but then the bulb was loss in the housing. Even more bothering is if you the base of the bulb and turn the base you can actually spin the how the light looks on them.

Like i said i'm not knocking their stuff some people are happy, some they work for and some they don't. All my cars have retrofits with exception to the 4runners and so do the motorcycles i prefer the correct distribution of light evenly with no hotspots. Granted the 4runners projectors aren't that great they still do a good job.

also the factors can be the salts used and the shape of the glass holding the salt which i haven't even bothered to look at

Dealing with the electronics for either a PnP or a retrofit scares me.....I dont know s**t about car wiring. on the other hand...opening the headlight sounds kinda fun! I could clean it and black out the chrome :D

Anybody know of some decent instructions on how to do the retrofit? The posts iv been reading seem to talk a lot about how to replace the projector but leave a lot to be assumed about how to wire them and set the rest up. Once the projectors are replaced is it basically like setting up a PnP?

Sorry [MENTION=70867]Code2[/MENTION], didn't mean to offend. I may have misunderstood that you were talking about a specific brand of bulbs and kit that you got and the fitment and quality. Thanks for elaborating :)
 
there was one thing they forgot to mention in that write up and it was the "squirrel finder" its a metal tab in inside the stock housing that needs to be moved a little forward for a better cut off, you don't want it all the way down, just half way from its location. if you search around the forum more you will find out what i am talking about

TRS supplies a relay harness with their quik-retro... basically supply power + ground, and then route the wiring and you are good to go.

I have the Morimoto pnp kit, it honestly is super easy to plug in. I just ordered the quick retro kit, only because I drive a lot of dark back roads and would like to have the extra highbeams. The relay harness is very simple, you plug one end to the stock wires, the other end to the ballasts, and then run the small power wires to the battery, and that's it. Here's a pic of the TRS wiring harness.

No worries man i don't sweat stuff like that i was working in the heat to day and dealing with a million questions of why is a white boy down here in the black neighborhood questions so i was a little crabby when i typed that.
 
I never realized the projectors in the stock headlights had a "less than desirable" cutoff.

I retrofitted OEM Bixenon projectors into a BMW 330 I had a few years back. It was nowhere near as bad as I thought getting the solenoid to flap for the highbeams etc. I'll definitely be dropping in those bixenon projectors once my children decided to give me some time in the garage :cheers:
