HID’s question

Might be a dumb question but the wiring and the ballasts have a ton of wiring so i wanted to ask how everyone was sealing that head light cover? I really don’t want any water getting in.

Also the lights seem a tiny bit loose so I’m waiting to see if they flicker and bounce around while driving. Time will tell i guess.


Oh and it’s a 2014 SR5.

Hi Mike,

...there are no dumb questions; except for the ones that aren't asked! I'm using 'OPT-7 HID' low beams (6000K color) in my '2012 Limited' and they are made to fit directly into the stock/factory H-11 halogen bulb socket!

As far as the wiring, the HID ballast gets plugged directly into the factory head-light output socket; so no modifications needed what-so-ever! I think that ALL name brands are doing it the very same way... even my LED H-11 (Fog Lights) are user friendly like that. I hope I answered your question Mike! 'Best to you',

They’re plugged in and working there’s just a ton of extra wiring and i can’t close the back cover on the lights. It’s just a local shop but i know the owner and it’s a 2 year warranty

What brand of HIDs' are these? There should be two wires feeding the bulbs (HOT and NEG) going into the bezel! My Ballasts gets mounted to the left & Right inner fender for a Certain Continuous 'GND' source. So you should have...

A 12V power source from the headlight output socket (in conduit or a wire loom) going to the ballast input wire, and then a heavily insulated ballast output cable (for the higher voltage output) to the HID bulbs... that's it!

If you can post a photo of your set-up, the electrical techs here can better help you with a more detailed observation/analysis... I'm sure it's no big deal!

You have to drill a 1" hole into the dust covers. Most HID kits come with a rubber grommet that passes the wires through and keeps the seal. Some people put silicon and electrical tape around the grommet to make sure no moisture goes into the lights.

Are the head lights made for this setup? Will they blind other drivers in oncoming traffic ? Don’t want to toss in hid into a headlight that aren’t made for them .

None of our headlights, especially the pre-facelift 5th gens, are actually made for HID setups.
 
you don't need to drill into the dust covers like everybody does on this forum.
All you need to do is run the wiring below where there is a grommet. Make sure to seal the hid grommet with something or make your own custom grommet like I did. Super easy. Mount your ballasts in the lower front core support.
See my thread for more clarification.
The top of the engine bay will look stock with no wires running around.

maybe it's too late in the evening for me, but are you suggesting that drilling the dust cover and using a grommet is bad, but using a custom grommet like you did is good? because that makes no sense. when you create a hole, you use a grommet to seal it.

i tried to follow your photos but couldn't get an actual answer as they seemed more artistic than informative.

most people on here have HID kits that come with a grommet to seal the hole they drill in the dust cover. looking at my headlight assembly, and your photos, i cannot figure out where you're routing wires (and putting some custom grommet), that is less intrusive and advantageous at the same time.

That cover is less than $10 if you make a mistake, just drill a hole and use the grommet already on the wires

Sorry. I need better photos. As far as not drilling into the dust cover. Your more likely to get mositure from the top vs the bottom as there is a splash guard and also the hole is way above the ground with our height clearance. Water is not going to shoot in that one small hole below the headlights. Unless you just go through a lake.

You can drill through the dust cover. It’s all personal preference.

You realize the hole under the headlight is already there, right? It’s sealed with factory grommet with wiring attached to it. I didn’t just drill a hole in the bottom of my headlight. Lol

This is the same custom grommet I used.
You need a 1.5-1.75 inch diameter grommet so it will be snug fit.
Thickeness is up to you. You can get this online or eBay. I had grommets laying around from working at Acura. You may need to drill a small hole in the tiny grommet if no hole is provided. I will demonstrate how this is all done with a sample grommet and hid bulb. It’s really not rocket science. It’s just a rubber grommet. It’s not like I am swapping in a Tundra motor in.

I rather trust my custom grommet underneath than A cheap China hid grommet attached to a drilled out dust cover on the top of the bay that comes with the bulb.

Custom grommet. I used some super glue and silicone as well.
