High beam headlights

"Here's the comparison:

Hi Beam stock: 9005, 12.8V, 65W, 1700 lumens, 320 hours / Hi Beam ...
HIR1(9011), 12.8V, 65W, 2530 lumens, 400 hours

Lo Beam stock: 9006, 12.8V, 55W, 1006 lumens, 360 hours / Lo Beam ...
HIR2(9012), 12.8V, 55W, 1875 lumens, 1000 hours"

Why aren't these more popular (or well known)?

They seem to be the cheapest and easiest upgrade, with little or no down side...

Almost twice as bright with longer life as well?

https://www.amazon.com/Philips-9012-Standard-Halogen-Headlight/dp/B00U32DG4C

isn't there something about using 9011 instead of 9005 reduces the life of the bulb?

are you running these, is the increased temp okay in the housing? i'm happy with my HID low beams but want better high beam performance.

Not sure why they don't have more popularity - my experience says they certainly should. Especially since LED's in a reflector housing are not the optimum combination. FWIW I have the 9011 65W HIR bulbs in my high beams. The 9012 55W you linked would be much brighter than stock but not nearly as bright as the 9011.

I haven't noticed any issues related to heat and doubt there is much swing comparing the heat of these to the standard halogens vs. any HID bulb setup. If you read the tech info this bulb is a design which isn't subject to a shorter lifespan than regular halogens. These would seriously be a killer combo with your HID projector low beam setup.

Really I only have one issue now; reflective road signs on a dark road are painfully bright distractors to my eyes from the awesome long distance reach of the lights...:thumb3:

The High beam seems to be a no brainer,

but I was wondering what the combo of the 9011 and 9012 (high and low HIR together) would be like for only about $100...

Cheaper than many (most?) of the short lived "upgrade" bulbs out there,

I'm really surprised we don't hear anyone else even talking about them.

Definitely worth a little more research... :keyboard:

Concur. I ran these for ~3 years in my 2010 and they were fine when I traded it in.

Since my HIDs are bi-xenon I haven't been very motivated to make the move for the highs ... maybe this thread will do it.

i'm seeing a few photos of these that have been put into the wrong housing all with bubbled sides, it looks like heat is an issue
philsey you ran the 9012 high beams or 9011 low beams for 3 years?

Highs. I had LS460s retrofitted in the LB. Zero heat issues. Unfortunate the LS's won't fit in the Gen 5.1. I miss those.

You mean you saw melted head light housings, or was it the fog light housings? I’ve seen melted fog lights since the stockers are 18W, but not the headlights.

i've found photos of the bulbs themselves melted, that's why i asked for first-hand experience to make sure the high-beam housing wouldn't melt.

look at the photos in the amazon reviews:

Usually that sort of thing happens when the installer doesn’t clean the oil off the glass. I get a clean paper towel and generously wipe down with rubbing alcohol before installing any bulb. Insert the bulb carefully not to touch any part of your car either. If you do then wipe down again with more alcohol. Avoid using thethe Side of the paper towel which make contact with your hands to wipe. Yes you can use gloves as well but some people get their gloves all greasy from their hands just trying to put turn gloves on. Extreme yes. But if you wanna do it right then go these length. **** I hate postings shit on my phone.

So I purchased the 9005 LED Headlight Kit | 9005 LED high beam Upgrade with the anti flicker canbus but only installed the LED lights to see if they were dead or flickered badly in DRL mode. I was surprised at how fast the flicker was that I almost couldn't detect it and the lights were a bit dimmer than when switched to the brights (which had zero flicker). I assume it was an optical illusion, but as I glanced back and forth at them only one of them had a noticeable flicker depending on which one I looked at. Anyone else running these without the canbus in DRL mode and ok with the minor flicker? I'm afraid as they warm up or are left on for longer periods they might flicker worse or people will think I'm going nuts flashing my lights :suspicious:?

The only reason I'd consider going this route is to keep the functionality of the DRL's without blasting the full on brights when switched to DRL.

Had someone across from me at a stoplight last week, I couldn't see their flicker when looking straight on but it was obvious in the corner of my eye. Even in daytime it was so disorienting that I had to go home and lay down because I thought o was about to puke. Please don't let them flicker.

This topic is so confusing! I'd like to go LED as I don't like the yellow hue of the halogen, but I also don't want flickering lights.

Has anybody tried the Morimoto option successfully? Seems they have issues with flicker in the high beams.

Flickering on the high beam bulb is caused in DRL mode because the lights work at a lower wattage. LED bulbs can't dim so they flicker instead when not getting enough power so this is why a canbus is needed to fix this issue. However, the canbus will cause the LED lights to be on at full brightness in DRL mode.
