I'm pretty sure the keys are:
-Lift off gas and on to brake in a short amount of time
-Very rapid depression of brake to max of 50-75% of full engagement
The situation it happens to me in is I'll see the cars ahead of the one I'm behind begin to slow rapidly, so I'll lift off the gas and on to the brake very quickly but only engage the brakes what feels to be about 50% (I do this to slow a little but have my foot there just in case I need to slow at a greater rate), then its time to find out if the seatbelts work (they do).
