"High Mileage" 5th Gen

Almost 4K miles on mine in the last year and not a single issue! I know...I know, only 4K miles but it's still 10X more reliable than my BMW.

Had 70K on my 2012 FJ and sold that so I could buy a 2010 with 84k miles on it. Didn't hesitate at all because of all the longevity I've seen here on the forums

Ahhhh ok...thanks for that. My brother is a bmw salesman and was telling me that I have too many miles on it...I plan to have it for the long haul, but in that tiny chance I have to sell it, I want to make sure as well it has a decent amount of miles.

I think he's just referring to general depreciation. The yearly average mileage for the average driver used to be 12,000. It's now generally considered to be 15,000. Going over that just means that you will suffer more than the average depreciation for your vehicle. Going over the 15K/year can cause your car to be considered a high mileage vehicle and dealerships are going to want to hammer you on your trade in value.

5th Gen with 217,000

I have a 2010 Limited with 217K on it. No issues to date. Front wheel bearings at 120K, other than that brakes, shocks (140K) and tires. I feel guilty not having to do more to it, but it just keeps on purring.

As long as it was taken care of and serviced, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a higher mileage 4Runner. Part of the charm (IMO) of the 5th Gens is how basic they are all things considered. There isn't too much to go wrong with them. Depending on age a mileage, I would prepare to look into suspension, serpentine belt, plugs and fluids. Other than that, just drive it. I'm at 110k on mine with the only necessary repairs being brakes tires and shocks.

My 2011 TE has 89k miles no issues other than regular maintenance items.
Good friend of mine works for Toyota has a Master Tech. and has seen some 5th Gen's over 200k with no major issues either. He said number 1 issue is the front timing cover leaking which is a costly repair, but not many of them leak. He said if they aren't leaking by 50k miles, they won't leak at all. He said well taken of 5th Gen's should go between 250k-300k without major repairs judging by the minor issues he sees on the very high mileage 5th gen's.

2013 TE with 100k miles

-all the door locks are now broken
-cargo tray is broken
-surface rust on frame welds (not a big deal)
-driver's seat reclines on its own
-rattles everywhere
-front plastic cover in front of skid plate falling off
-parking brake doesn't hold well even with dealer adjusting it several times
-speakers blown
-HVAC blower fan has gone out twice now
-HVAC doesn't like to redirect air to windshield anymore

Good news is that the drivetrain still works--including the KDSS

Yeah if you have KDSS on your 4runner and the system fails, be prepared for a VERY large bill according to my friend. He has done one KDSS system repair due to an accident (caused a slow hydraulic leak and than failure) and said it's around 4k to replace the entire system.

I hear you on the parking brake. My parking brake is a JOKE. It either has too much tension and constantly rubs the rotor (even when it's off), or it's so light that setting it is totally pointless. I gave up and left it with almost no tension. At least it's not rubbing the rotor any more.

I have none of your other issues, though. I'm at 103k.

I have over 182k on my 2010 4runner limited. bought it at 50k. had many off road adventures here at north Georgia mountains. not a single thing wrong with it. Bent one of the rims but it was my fault. Performed all the maintenance myself. one set of spark plugs and all the differential and transfer case fluid has been changed out to synthetic gear oil. TRD full synthetic oil filter and penzoil ultra platinum oil was used since 60k miles. Minor surface rust issues on underside since the vehicle came from Virginia. I wish this generation had the option for a V8 like the previous gen but the power is adequate as it is .

I'm at about 55k. Only issue I've had that wasn't aftermarket part related was the front brakes. Dealer replaced with the shitty Toyota pads (not the same as OEM). Squeaked like crazy. I had them replace them and re-surface the rotors again, but use the real OEM pads. (on their dime, not mine). Otherwise it's been gas, tires, oil, and a few issues with aftermarket stuff.

Let’s keep this going! Where is everybody at?

227,000 on my 2010 Limited. Bought used with 128,000. Other than oil, so far pads and rotors, 4 tires, a few parking lights, a battery and 1 wheel bearing. I'll probably jinx myself by saying this, but I'm hoping to certainly make 300,000 and maybe more. (And by the way, XREAS still going strong).

185,000 mixed driving on 2012 TE KDSS. Have done shocks, 3rd windshield, on 3rd set of tires, 3rd set of brake pads, new rotors at 100k for the heck of it, front wheel bearings at 180k, liftgate struts recently. do my own 5k oci's, runs smooth, looking for 300,000 miles.
