High Speed Shimmy on 2015's

If you had a 2011, then you were prime to have the shimmy no matter how many tire balances were done. The rack was just set up to soft to hold that size tire and SLA suspension style. As I stated above, I believe the fix was done in late 2012 calander year (around 11/12) as a running change to the whole 150 chassis line. The late 2013, 2014, 2015's all seem to be rock solid. Now that's not to say you can't have a shimmy on those model years there are still many other factors that can cause a shimmy , like tires etc.. but the reacurring and annoying 45 to 65 mile an hour shimmy has been fixed.

I know I am one that says the balancing first but I also believe the Toyota front ends (Tacoma, FJ Cruiser and 4Runner) seem overly sensitive to balancing and road conditions. I have heard it from owners and Discount Tire managers. My experience showed the tires had to be perfect.

I appreciate your reply and information.

Shimmy shimmy coca pop

Yup my 2015 te had it really bad. I brought it back within 24 hours of me picking it up and now a week and a half later it's still doing it. It's been there three days now. Last I heard they were trying another 4 runners wheels and tires....first it had a wicked steering wheel shimmy the. They rebalanced it and it seems to be gone. Then finally took it on a longer trip and you feel it through the whole truck. Barely noticeable but you feel it. Mind you its my spare vehicle and I only drive it to work but man two services and I haven't even broken 350 miles. This truck is failing me.

I have a friend that is having same issue also (SR5). Is there anymore info out there on this? They have had the same things done, new wheels, new tires, alignment which helped but did not resolve the issue. I don't understand what could be different on the 2015 than say like 2010-2014. It seemed all changes where cosmetic...
I feel bad recommending 4Runner (cuz I love mine) and they are having issues with this brand new ones!

the stealership replaced one tire claiming it was out of round then realigned and rebalanced it...this went on for a few visits all within the first week of me owning it...i never felt it on the test drive because you don't drive at highway speeds...it went to the dealership within 24 hours and a few more times the first week i owned it...what a cluster****

Wondering if you could elaborate on the Nitto and Toyo comment. Is that subjective or objective? Tried a Google search and nothing on those tires being 'more' round or in balance... If so that would be great as I've had tons of issues balancing around here on multiple vehicles. Don't know if it is the people, the roads or the cars themselves...

ultimately you're looking at the tires being at fault for the shimmy. and unfortunately for BFG their tire construction process leaves fault in the roundness of their tires as a sacrifice for being super light.

the most round well constructed tire you can get right now comes from Nitto and Toyo, albeit they're very heavy. they use a special method for constructing tires that leaves them almost perfectly balanced and round from the factory.

I've been looking for about a half hour trying to find the video that talks about it, as I don't know the specifics - but basically, Toyo uses a different process than the other manufacturers to wrap the carcass in rubber, and a different molding technique. It takes longer and results in a heavier tire, but it is also very round and balanced.

Shimmy on my 2016

I've had my 2016 for four months now. The shimmy began right before the first 5K mile service. Until then, smooth as a rock. The dealer balanced and rotated the tires, no improvement. Took it back and they performed a dynamic balance which simulates the weight of the vehicle while spinning the tire. That improved things quite a bit but there is still a light shimmy between 60-70 mph. I'm now awaiting a consult with a Toy Factory Rep. Will see what he has to say. BTW the tires are Dunlop with no visible unusual wear. I'm a little bummed. I love the truck but I want it to be right. Everything else is so "tight" with the overall quality of the vehicle, I'm just hoping Toyota steps up and gets this right!
