Highest Mileage 4th Gen?

05 V8 just hit 160k miles, obviously runs like new.



Off topic some, but does making road trips worry you any with having higher mileage? I trust my 4runner, but having higher mileage and worrying something will go out away from home is something I'm always worried about.



Anyone else?

I’m the same. I’m a worry wart and always wonder the same thing. Took about an hour and a half trip last weekend and the truck ran perfect. She has never given me any reason to doubt she couldn’t do a road trip, just my own worries have.

I just bought a 2003 SR5 V8 with 174k miles, runs fantastic. Good to hear these are just as reliable as a Toyota is supposed to be!

I am still considering replacing everything that can go out and cause me to be stranded just for the peace of mind lol (starter, fuel pump, sensors, alternator ect) but not sure if that too excessive or not.

I just took mine (197K miles) on a 2700 mile overland/off-road trip. Everyone thought I was crazy, but I know my 4runner in and out and it did it without a glitch. Keep up with regular maintenance and it will not let you down.:rockon:

my 06 has 220k, i drive it 180mi round trip 5 days a week to work. 1hr of the drive each way has no cell service at all. never worry about it at all. it has been well maintained and never left me stranded.

From what I've seen so far, nope! Make sure the maintenance is kept on top of and don't let rust get out of hand and apparently they'll last over 300k! :thumb:

What year model do you have, a V6 or V8?

Very few have any major issues with the 4th gen transmissions, was the transmission fluid ever changed prior to having to replace it, what was the issue on your's causing you to have to replace it?

Is there somewhere I can post pictures of the underside and get opinions?

As a new member, I can't create a thread until I hit a post count.

I'm not worried about interior/exterior, electronics, and certainly not about the drive-train. It's just the rust condition that seems to determine how long these will go.

I'm no expert but I'll throw in my 2 cents. It looks to me like someone has applied undercoating to it fairly recently. Could be preventative maintenance or trying to hide a problem. From the pictures, it looks to be solid but it's hard to tell. One of the hardest affected areas is the radiator support so check there first. If you have someone you trust with a lift it might be a good idea to get it gone over with a fine tooth comb. Better to spend a few dollars now then waste thousands. Glad you are trying to be smart and cautious and let us know what you decide.

This is an out of state purchase (~5hrs away from me, so will either drive up to pick it up or have it trailered down to Toyotechs here in Atlanta.)

I thought that might have been undercoating, but couldn't be sure. I've just been elated to see black rather than brown under these cars...

I'm scheduling a pre-purchase inspection with the Toyota dealership down the street from the dealer that has this. We'll see what they say.
