Highway speeds

Can anyone give me some info on the v6? I had an 04 with the v8 and I know it will not be that powerful. Mostly wondering how it would do on extended highway trips. Thanks

It'll do perfectly fine. They put that motor in the Tacoma, FJ, and 4Runner for a reason. It's bulletproof and has enough power for any reasonable usage. You shouldn't have any complaints especially with stock size tires. Test drive one to find out...

You will be fine. The engine has plenty of power. You will bounce the speed limiter early in the 3 digit speeds and it could easily go faster without the limiter...

Completed a road/camping trip earlier this year. I had my Runner loaded down with gear and wood to the point it was having major sag. Managed to make it from San Diego to Irvine to Sequoia National park to Yosemite National park before it was unloaded. Along doing 75 to 80 and keeping up with the led car in our group, a WRX.

On a nice flat highway it will roll along at 80 with no sweat, grades will cause a down shift if steep but it won't keep it from moving forward.

The V6 should be fine. I think the V8 only has like 25HP more than the 6.

You'll be solid. We have a family of 3 with gear and a travel trailer in tow no problem. Just did a road trip from SF Bay Area to Northern Idaho to Southern CA and back this summer. Solid throughout.

Drove ours to on a 3200 mile rt last April, did fine with 3 adults and gear. Great mileage and comfort. The v6 will surprise you, went to pass as semi, used a little too much authority and found the governor at 105mph. Without it it would go even faster for sure.

At regular I95 road speed we were stopping every 320 miles for fuel, if we could have stayed around 65 I know we'd have gone further between fills.

When we took our summer vacation to the Adirondacks, with additional gear and a canoe on the roof had no issues either. V6 pulls with authority, loaded, unloaded even up serious grades, we had no issues.

We traveled about 300 miles of fire roads as well in 4lo, some rather steep and just went and went.

The V6 is a perfect engine, with excellent manners, I remain impressed with it. I grew up in 70's and 80's when the V8 was king and always used to opt for V8's.....I don't miss it in the 4runner at all, for our uses.

Just treat

5th gear as a overdrive..like it is. On grades ill shift down to 4th if i find the rpm getting low and the tranny wandering. Kind of like the power/od switch on my 3rd gen.

I can still squeeze out around 20-23 mpg traveling around 65-70. with the tire psi 42f 45r and somewhat loaded.
