Hill behavior

So I have a rather short driveway, but it is fairly steep at the street end.

I was pulling into it today in 2WD, and decided to back up and line it up a bit better. I backed up about 15 feet, at the steepest part of the driveway.

Put it in D, let off the brake and pressed the gas.

Next thing I know, I hear lots of clicking and knocking sounds, and the dash is bleeping away, displaying what I assume is the "loss of traction" indicator (outline of a car with squiggly lines under it).

The truck would not move forward.

At the point where I came off the brake pedal, the car was completely stopped. Probably fell back less than a foot as I went for the gas.

I was able to get it back up the drive by holding the brake while giving it gas.

I have never had this problem with any of four other vehicles. What is going on? Is the computer sensing the backwards movement and having a time deciding what to do about it?

The sounds it makes while doing this make me think that something is slipping. And is isn't the wheels. i have a hard time believing the xmission can't handle it.

I will try it again in 4WD. Perhaps the 4R can manage my challenging driveway that way. :naughty:

Could it be the "Hill Assist" kicking in? MY 03' has had the uphill assist engage itself on the boat ramp before; it beeped and I could hear the brakes grabbing to keep it from rolling backwards. The only difference is, when I pressed the gas, it stopped engaging and went right up the hill.

Well, does the hill assist button need to be pressed for that system to engage? I thought it was for downhill control only.

I would say that the brakes were not involved, though I could of course be wrong.

I reproduced it once. Giving it gas definitely did not cause the truck to move forward.

Ah, another RTFM moment.

That IS the hill start assist system activating.

This truck is full of surprises.

Yep, according to the manual the slip indicator and the beeping is what is supposed to happen when the hill start system does its thing.

The manual makes it clear that it will only operate for up to five seconds. And that it is not meant to cover anything other than the gap of time when you are moving your foot from the brake to the acclerator.

I just worried my neighbors by trying it a few more times.

The truck did move forward, I just wasn't giving it enough juice earlier.

Reason being that the beeps and sounds made me think that something was wrong, so I instinctively let off the accelerator.

I did not get beeps I just got the sounds. It scared the crap
outta me, I thought my car was rolling backwards and the
engine was tearing up. Until I hit the gas and then it stopped.

Just wait until you take your rig off-road! Those same sound and flashing indicator will scare the crap out of you on your first off-roading trip.

In the end, these sounds and fashing lights work wonders!

yeah i know exactly what you guys are talking about...from what i learned from some people is that it disengages the gears so you dont tear them up when you roll backwards like that in drive..i think it puts in a sorta "neutral" state for just long enough for you to hit the gas and get it moving forward instead of tearing up stuff rolling backwards...atleast thats what i've been told
