Hill-start??

I have a 06 runner sport and I was on a steep hill today I went to pull out and started to roal back so I pushed on the gas just a little and the anti slip kicked in and a light went on on the dash with a little "Beep" noise as well ??

Does this have anything to do with the Hill start assist control ?

Is there a button you have to push to engage the hill start assist or does just kick in ?

It somewhat just engages on it's own.

I asked the dealer about the clicking and the noises, I was a little scared that I was breaking something, it sounds a little harsh, anyway they said that all the sounds and lights are normal and expected so not to worry when it happens.

There is no button to engage it but I do believe it takes some sort of sequence with the brake pedal or something to kick it in. I only say this because sometimes it works for me and sometimes it doesn't. So if anyone with more knowledge wants to step up, please do so.

Hill Start assist is automatic. It will kick in if you are rolling backward while in drive. Even if you shift into drive too fast from reverse it will let you know by beeping and pulsing the brakes. Parked in a driveway with the trans in drive if you let off the brake pedal the system will attempt to keep you stopped on a grade, but doesn't do a very good job, IMO. It's kind of gimmicky, but not bad to have.

It's one of the more annoying electronic features... cannot be disabled, makes a hell of a racket that has passengers wondering if the car's going to explode, and doesn't really work for every day driving.

I lurch back several feet before it actually makes a difference and holds the vehicle. However, I do believe it's doing what it is meant to do, which is assist on hill ascents when off-roading. For city driving, however, it is useless at stopping you rolling back into the car behind on a steep hill start.

I don't understand why they have the hill assist on the automatics and not the manuals. Seems like it would be more useful on manual transmissions.

The "Hill Start Assist Control" works exactly the way it was designed to work. It was designed to assist you on starting on a hill, not hold you there. There is approx 10 sec of pulsing the brakes which is more then enough time to move your foot from the brake to the throttle. If you are on dirt or a slippery slop you would not want the brakes to lock, you would slide back or to the side. That

even on automatics, there is some roll back, especially on steep hills. Besides, 4runners don't come with manual trannies these days
