Hitch step

Just added a hitch step and settled on a Smitybilt Beaver Tail. Works great and can prevent damage to bumper from those who are parallel parking challenged. The step also allows the option to tow via a tow rope. For those that are not off roaders and for some that are, it is a simple and useful addition. Looks cool and way better looking than the WeatherTech bump step.

I have one of these as well. Very useful when I need to get something quickly from the rear of the roof.

I got the BODY ARMOR BACKBONE HITCH SKIDPLATE from Wheelers Offroad

I really like it. Skid plate, wheel chock, and tow rope capable.

I do notice people tend to not tail gate as often as before.

How much do these get in the way of loading/unloading things out of the back? Someone already mentioned powdercoating it red to keep their shins safer - it strikes me (no pun intended) that it might be more inconvenient than not?

I have the Smittybilt Beaver Step in my hitch, and throughout my hockey season I'm loading and unloading all of my goalie gear out the back several times a week. No inconvenience, and no bruised shins to date.

Wish would have seen this sooner. I have the beaver tail but it is slippery sometimes. Going to and some grip tape soon.

Pics. I couldn't get it to go in any further, right now it is on the middle hole. My 285 spare was blocking it from going any further in, but I like where it is. Is still a tailgate deterrent.

I have a rear-loading box on my 4Runner and have ordered one of these to help with access and get the other benefits of this design over other steps. Your pictures have me a bit worried though, as it looks like it sticks out quite a ways. I have the stock 265 spare, so I'm hoping it will allow it to slide in to the furthest hole. Is it close to sliding further in with your 285 spare, or do you think it will take a bit of modification of that lower skid plate piece to get it in there?

If anyone wants one, I have a Backbone hitch step that I need to sell. Like others, with a larger spare underneath it stacks too far out for my liking. I'd return but I'm way past the return policy at 4WP and it's been sitting in my garage for 6 months. No scratches and never used for off-road use. PM if interested.
