Hola from San Diego

New to 4Runners. New to forum. Brian suggested that I drop in and give a shout, so here I am.

My build is in progress. Kinda knew what I wanted, so I've already done a lot. Not sure why, but the transmission cooler mod is kinda freaking me out. I'll get to it, but probably not without help/moral support. Only other major thing left on my list is the rear bumper, which shipped today from Idaho. ...and leveling out the ride after the rear bumper install.

Anyway, I'm getting old, so I don't plan to wheel too hard, but I do like to go semi-fast in dirt, which is why I did the Fox res coilovers up front. So far so good. Generally play around Ocotillo Wells, since we have a bunch of friends with toys who go out there. Pismo and Valley of the Moons are also pretty common destinations (although this truck hasn't been there yet).

Anyway, just saying Hi. Really like this forum. It's helped a LOT. Hope to meet some of you face to face at some point.

Nice looking ride.

I'll be headed in your direction this summer to visit some family in stockton, will probably start out on the southern end and work my way up pch till sf then head east.

The tranny cooler bypass is Really important. Some folks think the issue is with the radiator, its not. The problem is the connections between the factory tranny cooler that sits inside the bottom of the radiator. If those connections fail, then tranny fluid leaks into the radiator. Radiator/engine don't care too much but when tranny sucks fluid back it then pulls coolant along with tranny fluid. The trans, of course, cannot take this and quickly fails and you end up stranded on the side of the road.

It may never cause you an issue but if it does there will be no warning just a failed, burnt out tranny. So spend the $35 for a decent cooler and you'll sleep much better. The mod is ez, mount the cooler where you want, run two hoses to in/out on tranny, then connect a new hose between the in/out of the original factory cooler (this prevents any coolant spill should the original tranny cooler connections within the engine radiator start to leak-it will just swing back and forth in this hose).

Here is a link that will explain the problem that toyo built into some 3rd gen 4runners (those w/4wd): any body ever crack-opened up OEM rad, if not, here we go! - YotaTech Forums

Good luck and enjoy the ride!
