Hole in the muffler. Options?

Hey guys,
First post here! So I purchased a 2000 4runner SR5 with 190,000 miles on it out here in Iowa 2 months ago for $4200 and I am very happy with it so far. However, just recently it started sounding like something was loose under the body that would vibrate very loudly (sounded like metal). I looked under and it looks like the muffler has rusted through. Now I have been searching on here for my options, but have become a bit confused. People talk about different mufflers/exhaust, but are there any benefits other than the sound that is produced? I am an automotive newb. I saw there are some on ebay, but they have different #'s (even for the same year), like 56 in., 43 in., 58 in. How do I know which size to get and should I trust mufflers on ebay? They start at $79 w/ free shipping, which seems pretty cheap. Thanks in advance.

Go talk with a local 4x4 shop, start reading build threads, use the google search bar above to search the site for muffler threads, read threads.

go to your friendly neighborhood muffler shop and ask fior a stock replacement. You'll get quoted somewhere in the $70-100 range, and they will install it for you.

Most guys are going for the sound when they put on whole exhaust or new mufflers.

Different sized mufflers are mainly for sound. They also might be smaller and "restrict" air flow LESS for more performance gains, but it is probably minimal.

I'd recommend Flowmaster, but its a personal preference.

What is your main goal, by replacing your current muffler? Do you want something that will sound exactly the same?? Do you want something slightly more aggressive? OR Do you want something obnoxious?

If all you want is something to replace your current setup, just go to a local shop, and have them put in a stock replacement piece.

If you want something that is almost stock, but has a little bit more of an aggressive tone, I'm looking into the Flowmaster 50 Series Muffler. Apparently, only mildly aggressive sounding, and won't deafen you.

If you are looking for anything that will be obnoxious, and may even land you some noise pollution tickets, with with a Flowmaster 40 series, or 30, or any of the other race car type mufflers.

it's a terrible idea but i'm going with a single chamber with no baffles. probably a Full Boar from ebay. it's exactly like a flowmaster 10 series. i may attract a little ill attention with it.

If you don't want to "do-it-yourself", then do exactly what everyone said, take it to a muffler shop.

If you DO want to do it with your own two hands, get a Walker stainless steel QuietFlow from RockAuto.com. Bolts right in, sounds almost exactly like stock, and is high quality.
