saturday was a spectacular day at hollister, the weather was great it was 60 degrees, there was only 4 other trucks besides us there, a couple of "good ole boys" (rednecks in a GMC) which i had to rescue on several occasions (no pics though) so it was the ideal day to be out there, i think many people thought it would be too muddy but it was actually ideal, just a bit of mud in the obstacle course and of course the mud pit. i came with my friend dan and hid 89' 4runner, lock'd front and rear, 35"s 5.29's yada yada yada. this is my friend that works for toyota corporate, he trains toyota technicians and he is also the guy that helped me install my new engine.
so most of the day we were just running blue squares and black diamonds then we can to this steep grade and it was rutted out and i was in front, i did this trail before but on my 33's, so i parked and walked up to check it out (the pictures of me walking up is the trail, there are no pics of me wheeling it cause it was way to steep for me to ask my girl to get out) i just tore up the hill no problem in the 35"s but it was still really scary! my buddy in his first gen actually couldnt get up it, he kept getting stuck in a rut and almost tipped over, so i had to brace him while he backed up and out of the run.
after we met back up we ran some more trails, then did the big articulation section which provided some difficulties for me because i havent done any trimming in the rear wheel wells yet, so the little sheetmetal piece that supports the rear bumper cover kept digging into my tires and was holding me back, suprisingly it was the only thing in the rear well that was rubbing well that and the busted bumper cover, but i was suprised as to how much i could stuff them. after that problem solving we went to the new white rock trail, its just a little rock crawling section that has to be less than a month old cause that was when i was last out there, there was a few tree in the mix too so it was fun!
and at the end of the day we were in the obstacle course running it backwards, crawling all the big rocks and stumps, and i was on the opposite side of the course and my buddy decided to crawl a rock without me to spot him and BAM!!! he landed right on his drive shaft!!! it was seriously beat up so we called it a day and when back to the airing station, when we got there we removed the drive shaft in order to drive to beat it straight so he could try to drive it home, we ended up getting it pretty straight well as good as we could get it, we put it back on and headed home....
(i know what your thinking, why didnt we just remove it and drive in 2wd using the front axle on the way home? well that wasnt a option because his front axle is a squared axle, built for strenth and its not balanced so its basically no good at a normal driving speed)
sothe max we could do on the freeway without his truck shaking like crazy and blowing the bearings was just about 35mph, so we kept that pace til gilroy, and dropped the truck off at the toyota dealer, pulled the driveshaft and we all hopped in my truck and headed to Toyota Norcal headquarters in San Ramon where my friend works, (hes gonna take the drive shaft to a buddy to get rebuilt) so i dropped him off and his wife picked him up and then we all headed home, the end!!
