HOLY bare steel and rust

I went to rinse off my T4R today (it lives coated in dirt basically cause I work in a dusty environment.) I thought I would be thorough as rain had turned everything into muck. I go to rinse the door jamb and both driver's and passenger front at the point where the plastic meets the metal is bare steel with surface rust. Known issue? I'm talking a foot on the driver's side, 6 plus on the passenger. What to do about mitigating it? I'm sure it has been a chronic thing but I've never noticed before....

Looks to me like wear from driver and passenger feet scraping on door sill getting in and out of vehicle. Paint is worn off.

Mr. rust loves to eat bare metal hidden under dirt.
 
I'm guessing this is happening when people step into the vehicle. Their feet are probably rubbing the metal every time causing it to wear off.

Hmmm. well it's a work vehicle and I do frequent stop starts in a dirty environment.... Should I just spray some rattle can paint on it? or ???
 
Its not feet its dirt and dust on your rubber door seal grinding into your paint when you drive. The doors flex and move slightly during driving, so any grit trapped between the seal and paint is like sand paper.

Used to get the same on my old XJ. Keep that area clean.

Possible. But notice that the wear is localized, and not on the entire length of the door sill. In one photo you can see the floor mat in front of the seat. Wear area is just below that, so as you said it is a "sanding effect" but from grit on shoe soles rubbing on the area.

Just use some emory cloth to shine it up, dab some primer on the area, cover with paint to match vehicle, and keep clean. Repeat as needed.

I was just reviewing in my mind how i get into and out of the vehicle, since all these actions are just done subconsciously. As I enter the vehicle I definitely do not touch that area, I hop straight into the foot well with my right foot bringing my left foot in after sitting. When I exit I may pivot my left foot and graze the area leading to the rubbing. I do carry help with me on the passenger side so hence probably they do the reverse. I rarely use the running board....

I agree the dirt comes in from the outside and sits there/gets trapped. But I do think the feet exacerbate this rubbing as the rear doors don't exhibit the same wear because I don't carry rear passengers I also don't open and close the rear doors with nearly the same frequency either...
 
Lol, umm the large amount of dirt in the photo might have something to do with it.The dirt is piggy backing in on your feet, depositing itself right there on the door seal junction. Take a look that is exactly where the seal sits. Think sand paper sponge trapped against a painted surface vibrating with every mile is going to have an effect

Rears wont get it because the seal has done its job. If you had passengers depositing grit right onto the seal area you'd have the same.

LOL. It's a WORK truck and that's how my Runner lives. Literally I'd be lucky if it is clean for an actual 24 hr period. I am on this car washing/detailing kick (watching the videos at least) and I chuckle when on such videos they say 'Look at how filthy this test car is'. I'm like 'Where's the dirt?'

Thanks for the rec! I am going to go to show the dealer first when I get my next oil change within the next 2 months then fix it! Obviously my work environment is a huge contributing factor but perhaps a better seal would help.
 
One one of my cars I put the cheap version of the plastic film that is used for protecting paint on bumpers. It was about ten bucks for a roll at the local auto parts store and while it is a little ugly it does protect the door sills from this type of wear. I would sand it down and repaint - maybe with black since matching isn;t going to work and add the cheap film
 
How easy is it to pull that door sill trim piece off? Depending on what it looks like under there I think I would do a more complete fix if I could get access. I attacked it from the rear, carpet side and all it did was bend. I didn't want to hear a pop next and break a tab or something. Anyone?

Easy as hell! Start from the back with your fingers beteen the trim & carpet and work your way fwd.
