Holy Grail or a little too much rust?

Body and interior is clean. You can tell the Minnesota winters really beat up on that frame already. I'm sure it was close to spotless when it was in California.

I still never understand why people who live up north/ northeast fly out to buy a rust free vehicle and drive it in the winter especially where they salt. So much for a "rust free vehicle."

Yeah you'd think they would understand the importance of rust treatment underneath.

Way too much rust. With 181k on it, you're going to be doing a lot of little maintenance down the road. That's going to make everything that much harder.

I think the pictures are made to look like not much rust. If you look at the one bad pic, you can kinda see cracking flakes on the opposite side frame they dont show. I would never buy a vehicle like that. My buddy have a tacoma thats all rusted and he snaps every single bolt he removes.

You would be better off just getting a clean 4runner 5spd 4wd and just getting an ARB or stock locker and adding it. Its not that much money if that what you really want.

As stated above. A good chance it needs a water pump/timing belt and lower ball joints also.

This truck is posted on the Denver Craigslist and is only about an hour south of me. If anyone is seriously considering buying it, let know and I'll check it out for you.

Surface rust. Not bad at all. The thing to look at is the holes. A good indicator of bad rust is rust bubbling up around the holes in the frame and crossmembers and also major flaking/peeling at the welds. This one just needs some TLC. Sounds like the owner knows what he has so, as Kmurt said, why he/she wouldn't have treated that thing when they got it back to MN is a travesty. Glad they're selling it because they don't deserve to have a truck like that.

yeah i don't see that much rust other than surface rust

Surface rust. Not bad at all.

While I do agree that from the pictures, the rust to the frame doesn't look too bad, the engine bay tells me everything I need to know. I personally wouldn't go anywhere near one of these vehicles with that much rust on the nuts, bolts etc etc. Makes turning a wrench on it a complete nightmare. But, that's just me.

I don't see why it's a holy grail. Painted bumpers? An inch taller? 5 Speed?

Looks like my Limited without an auto.

That is not bad rust....in the pictures provided.... BUT what they don't show is the rear end looking under from behind. That is where the real corrosion magic happens. I am pretty sure they avoided taking a picture of that.

It's nice but I wouldn't pay $7900 for it. The rust, at least based on the pictures, isn't that bad at all.

He won't have any issue selling it, that I can guarantee....

Where's the rust? On the air hose clamps? My 1999 was somewhat comparable (probably worse) and I proactively replaced those clamps. The linkage looks pretty good. The hose clamps on the heater valve are cleaner than mine. The heater valve bracket looks like it has some surface rust, which is probably is the rustiest part in the engine compartment that I see. The top of the ABS module is rust free (this was pretty bad on my 2000 which WAS a rust bucket).
I just see a pretty clean engine compartment even with the engine shine which doesn't hide rust.

No offense but you guys in the rust free areas are a little oversensitive to the rust factor. This coming from a guy that pretty much lost a 4Runner to rust.

Lol. I 100% admit that I am ridiculously sensitive to any rust. May be different if I was from an area that was more prone to it, thus more used to dealing with it. And I would also care less if my vehicle turnover was higher. But I want to keep this thing on the road as long as possible, so best to have as clean of a plate as possible.

180k, a leaking sunroof, peeling clearcoat AND it need brakes??

I don't care how geeked out someone would be about the options on this one, $7900 for that truck is out of control...

Wait. Timeout. AND it needs the TB replaced.

Dear lord. Delusion.

Looks like my Limited without an auto.

1999
5-speed
Multi-mode 4WD
e-locker
Leather and loaded.

It's basically one of THE most versatile/capable 3rd gens you can find.

Multi-mode T-Case for great "anytime" 4WD on-road.
Rear diff lock to handle essentially any off-road obstacle.

Likely has one of the higher gear ratios. 4.10, 4.30 or maybe even the elusive 4.56 (but I think the latter was only really found on the RR Locker, 5-speed 3RZ).

As I understand it, overall it's a pretty rare option combo on probably the most sought after production year of the 3rd gen.

It's in pretty decent shape and the rust doesn't look like it's much to worry about (mine has way more rust/rot). Worth $7,900... Eeeesh... dunno about that one, but I wouldn't be opposed to shelling out $6000 to $6500 for it if I was looking to buy.

I'd be curious to know how it got so much rust underneath for being a California car. Did the PO drive through salt water?

It needs some attention but the asking price isn't out of the ballpark.
