Home link and a genie opener

Just gotta try it again. Gotta program the remote frequency to the car then the car to the opener. If it's a genie screw drive then the learn button is behind the lenses just below and off to the side of the left bulb. It's a small round black button with a red led above it.

This is the piece of advice that made it click for me! Thanks a bunch for this one. You really do exactly this - program the remote to the home link button and THEN hit the learn button on the opener to connect to your home link button.

No problem. I kinda have an advantage. I do garage doors for a living. I have programmed anything from a Yukon to a Caddy to a Porsche Panamera.

Spent a few hours Saturday installing a new Genie garage door opener.

Since then I have spent a few hours trying to get the HomeLink button working.

I will now gladly pay anyone a thousand dollars to get the HomeLink button to work.

2016 4Runner
7155LD Genie garage door opener, purchased at Home Depot in 2024.

There are a couple of small buttons on the Genie opener/motor, on one side near one of the LED lights.

I have no idea what these buttons are, and they are not needed! Ignore these damn buttons!

The “learn” button is apparently the clickable plastic tab labeled “SET”.

When any instructions or YouTube videos refer to a “learn” button, press and hold “SET” for a second or two and let go. A purple light starts flashing.

So here goes, from the beginning…

Press 4Runner HomeLink buttons 1 and 3 for 10-20 seconds, until HomeLink light starts flashing fast. Let go. This clears HomeLink.

Press 4Runner HomeLink button 1 and let go. This tells HomeLink you want to program button 1.

Hold Genie remote up to HomeLink buttons, and press and hold any one of the Genie remote buttons for a few seconds. It doesn’t matter which Genie remote button you press.

If it worked. Pressing the HomeLink button 1 will cause HomeLink light to flash rapidly. Congrats you are almost there. But no need to rush to the next step.

Now click the learn/SET button on the Genie opener/motor to enter learning mode. Within 30 seconds hop back in 4Runner, press HomeLink button 1 for 2-3 seconds. Press again for 2-3 seconds.

If it worked, tap the HomeLink button 1, watch your garage door open, and crack open a beer.

When I did mine - which was several years ago - I remember that you don't have much time to get to the opener motor unit to push the learn button or it will time out.
