Home Made Adjustable Panhard bar.

Ya the sorona one looks better. But 200 is a lot, I'm going to put this through some tests and give it a shot.

Since I didn't put it in yet maybe a better bolt wouldn't be bad. But I know the welds will hold for sure.
 
IMHO, you should listen to the guys on yotatech.

Wow, I just read that thread, and yeah, it got nasty fast.

I will say though, that Wabbit is correct in his assesment, as snarky as he was about it at first. I think he has predicted the failure point right (BTW, I am a mech engineer too). Welding has weakened the rod (moreso if grade 8 or 10), and that joint will be a stress concentration no matter what kind of loading, bending, torsion, or tension/compression.

This thing will probably be strong enough to withstand your flexing test, but over time, you will very likely get cracking and eventual failure. I am not saying don't make your own, but try to match material properties of components, then heat treat it post weld to stress relieve and achieve the correct crystal structure. You really don't want this thing failing while on the highway.

Your confidence in the weld is what really scares me. It may be a great weld, even a perfect one, but it is still a stress concentration. There are other factors than just the weld quality that will cause the weld to fail.
 
If you were worried about cost, could have stepped it up the $50 and gotten a drop bracket. then you would keep the stock geometry and its cheap. that is what i did and i havent looked back.

You and everyone else at Yotatech thought my hinges would fail, well it's been over a year, daily driven, on a rough patch of highway I might add, and even taken off road a few times, and NO signs of wear. I've since replaced the center receiver and locking tube, only because I wanted the option of removing my trailer hitch insert when not in use. The old one, was seized inside. Upon doing so, the locking tube, could not be saved, so we replaced it with some round tubing instead.

I can understand that you're a mechanical engineer, but everyone can be wrong sometimes. Not saying you are, but you could be. That being said, I'm not advicating that he run the truck down the freeway on the first run, I'd try it out like he mentionned, maybe take it somewhere secluded, with some buddies in tow, and test it off-road a little, and then give it a good torture test before taking it on public road ways.

The only reason I even commented on his thread initially, is because I know how it feels to be doubted, and having my idea being bashed, and just wanted to give him a little encouragement.

As for the thread over at Yotatech, it doesn't surprice me that Wabbit, and the others got nasty, that's what they do best over there. That is why I spend my time here, less politics, and a more friendly atmosphere. I've even posted an update or two on my tire carrier thread over there, and not a single one of them, had the decency to say "wow, that's great" or "well I guess I was wrong, good job!"

Eitherway, this forum is meant to help, not bash. We could all take a page from the OP, by trying something original, rather than throwing a ton of cash at something, and doing what everyone else is doing. A big part of this hobby, is innovation, let's celebrate that, by commending the OP for trying something on his own! :trophy:

Oh, I was just joking around with you, not being serious. It was just funny that you said both sides of the argument in one post.

I am not trying to bash anything, just see if the OP has thought through standard design issues. It appears not in this case, so there are alot of legitimate concerns, especially since this is a safety critical component.

Sure, commend people for doing new things, but when it is on a vehicle, you have to do them well, and putting home depot components into your suspension is not innovation, it is a mistake. Just look at the bolts that hold the panhard in, they are high quality, hardened steel, and cost a couple bucks each. It is an obvious mistake to attach these to low grade HD bolts, and we want to prevent catastrophic failure. There have been alot people that have been saved from themselves by people's questioning of their design.

Anyway, I'm all for innovation, but do your homework first. Don't make novice mistakes, and don't dismiss pushback.
 
I am sure that it is strong enough. The oem pan bar tubing is thin as all can be. the weakest link would be the welds.

the oem is close to 1 1/4" .120 wall

I have used some sketchy things before, but idk about this design. I personally would never run that, but if you do, and have good luck then it was good enough!
 
I know guys mention the drop bracket but it still needs the adjustable panhard vbar.

Yota tech is crap, this site is much better. One guy at yota tech spent most of the posts patting himself on the back for being a engineer, but he sounded like a 17yr old kid with to much time on his hands. He even went as far as finding some posts from other forums that were a few years old lol

i think this is definitely a case-by-case basis. Yotatech seems to be geared a little more towards the mechincal and less towards the cosmetic.

Personally, I participate in both, and expect "opinions" on both. I believe providing/receiving opinions from peers is what the forums are primarily there for???? other than the Toyota Owners Camaraderie.

I love my Toyota, and respect the forums. Since I am not a mechanic and do not have extensive experience with automobile repairs, I try to hold my tongue when I dont know FOR SURE what I am talking about. I have gained alot of knowledge and feel the forums have assisted me in many many ways.

With all that said, let us know how your new modification goes. Good Luck:thumb3:

i like yotatech thats where i go when i cant fond solution here, its like a toyota wiki you just gotta find it

. Ill be welding another nut onto each side of mine today before I put it on.

Are you going to heat treat it after welding? Seriously guys, I can appreciate the shallow pockets, but sometimes there is a reason these components are expensive, because they are high stress and safety critical.

If you don't believe us, then go read it for yourself, but don't cheap out on critical components!

Look at Brian and J-Money's LCA's; instead of welding a threaded stud onto the existing bar end, they used a complete joint with threaded stud (the neck of that stud is still probably the biggest stress concentration, but it is one hardened piece, not a weld). The only welding they had to do was the threaded bung into the DOM tube (all very bulky and not really a stress concentration). That is a MUCH better way to do it than welding the threaded stud onto the existing bar end. You could probably copy this on the existing bar and have a suitably strong adjustable bar (use a threaded weld bung, not a nut). It may not be quite as cheap, but it is a million times stronger.

A manufactured panhard may be the way to go w/this one.
I know $200 is a lot of money but is the cost gonna reflect what could happen if it fails at the wrong time. Its not just you its others around you.
Its a great idea and it can be made to last, but after spending your time effort (and possibility of having to buy anothers premade product) you could end up spending more than you think?
NOT TO MENTION THE LIABILITY YOUR INSURANCE WONT COVER IF THE FAILURE HURTS SOMEONE?
