Instead of making a new thread, I'm just turning this into a storage mod thread
Center console shelf
I like storage to be neat and hidden away. This is a weakness of the 5th gen, so I'm doing little things to make it better imo.
Here's a cheap little mod I made to take advantage of the little shelf inside the center console box. I put stuff that I don't need everyday, like a disposable razor, floss, bandaids, mouthwash...just weird little knick knacks that I use. And stuff that I'd rather have out of sight in there.
This is about a $10-$15 mod assuming you have a dremel. Although, the dremel's not necessary.
I used a stiff art canvas board from Michael's which was on sale, some black shelf liner, some form of strong glue(I used rubber cement from a model I'm building), and although probably not necessary, I cut an aluminum strip with my dremel to reinforce the shelf.
First I used a piece of cardboard, the dimensions are roughly 7"x6.75" and once that fit okay, I traced that over the art canvas. The canvas was made out of pretty stiff cardboard as I found out after cutting it. I plastidipped it as a way to coat it. Then I glued on the rubber shelf liner. Glued on the aluminum strips on the bottom. Tried to glue shelf liner on the bottom, which was a mistake...recommend don't do that. Peeled it off and just repainted the bottom. The bottom now looks kinda crappy from the dried glue.
storage box
I had one in the 4th gen. The 5th gen is very... not cargo box friendly with the reclining seats. Its 4-5inches shorter length wise than my old one, but it still fits a decent amount. I could have made it longer by using the driver side wheel well, but I would have run into problems with the jack access. And by putting it on the other side, it acts as a partial cover to the wall compartment which I like.
In the box is a large wrench, tire iron, MRE, a small tool set, a folding shovel and 50' of 550 cord.
