Homegrown Tune Up

So they wanted $550 for a tuneup...running rough, and thought that was a good place to start.

$180 for parts...an hour or so for me to plug the stuff in.

New plugs, wires, rotor, cap, air filter.

Now it starts, then dies. Starts and runs if you press on the gas pedal and keep it flowing.

Checked the firing order and went over the wires 20 times.

I know it's vague, but any thoughts?

How can I tell?

It slipped in and only had two screws to secure it.

BTW, it's a '92 Runner I just bought and when I had it looked at the mechanics said it looked like the wires were original. Two plugs were pretty fouled, the other four were nasty.

with the ingition system new the only thing i can think of is fuel.
start with a fuel filter, if that doesnt help test the engine for codes it may be throwing.

if that doesnt help then think sensors or injectors.

Plug gap correct?

Air gap correct?

Vacuum leaks? (use a vac gauge and tie it into the intake mani tree and watch the readings).

Timing at 10 degrees BTDC (with those 2 terminals jumped with a piece of wire)?

Gas cap seating properly?

No crossed/touching/shorted plug wires? And heaven-for-bid you didn't use any Bosch stuff?

Check all those and report back............
