Homemade bumper build

I wanted an offroad style bumper but a couple things have kept me from pulling the trigger. 1) Weight 2) Cost. All the nice looking bumpers on the forum were an inspiration. I decided to build one with the help of my bro. I don't have a need for a winch, and don't need to run through walls, so I'll be able to keep the weight down using 1/8" steel plate. I took some design elements from CBI, Demello, and Shrockworks and am building one with a mix of the 3 I think. Today we took measurements and did a mock up with cardboard. I'll be buying the steel this week. I'm stoked to see the final product but it's going to be a month or so before its finished. We will be working on it a little at a time when we get the chance to on weekends. Just wanted to start a thread from start to finish so here's some pics from today.

Topher your write up was actually a good help for me when I was trying to get an idea for mounting points/bracket before I removed the stock bumper. So thanks for that. It will be a little while before its completed but I'll continue to post any progress made.

Looking forward to see the progress of your bumper build. I've been seeing more homemade bumpers on here in the past year or so and it is something I have been considering but have yet to accomplish my first mod.

So were you planning on semi-corrugated cardboard, or sturdier multi-ply? I personally would forgo the weight savings and go with the stiffer cardboard for my bumper.

Also your tube bumper looks nice. :)

Just an update. I bought the steel yesterday. We will probably start cutting next weekend, I'll post pics of progress

Sub'd..
Rancid13 you got any close up pics of your wheels and tires from sides? they look great.

You ever finish up that bumper?

I never really got started working with the steel. Farthest I got was the cardboard mock up. Life has a way of getting in the way of projects. I might try to finish this Summer if I have the time. If so I'll definitely update the thread

I hear you man! I took two weeks off of work in hopes to get some things done on my rig and I am lucky to get 30-45 mins to myself a day, my wife and daughter win over my attention. Family is always more important in the end though.

This is true. I'm actually thinking about pulling the trigger on a Demello bumper. I just don't see myself having the time to complete this on my own. I talked to them today and they'll do 10% off for forum members. They're in CA and I'm on the opposite side in FL so freight shipping is $285 alone. Ouch. The 10% off kinda helps with that though. I wish I could get some interest in a group buy on here maybe get a little more discount.
