I ran two sets of Treadwrights in the past. The first set were Guard Dawgs (265/75) and they were awesome. I did not have a single problem and they balanced with little weight but they were HEAVY tires. I ended up selling them to another jeeper in Pittsburgh and he ran them for a couple years without issue. My 2nd set were the mudders (235/75) or whatever they were called. They did not balance well and the shop had to rotate the tire on the wheel to get them decent. I threw beads in them and it helped but the tires flat spotted when cold and roared on the highway. They did their job though and still are for another pittsburgh off roader who is using them on a bug build.
You get what you pay for with these tires. I knew what to expect when saving money on tires so I did not mind the little shakes, shimmies, and noises.
I later discovered Goodyear Authority tires. Their performance, longevity, durability, and cheap price/free shipping gave me no reason to buy Treadrights anymore. Best tire that performs superb in every condition and I am on set # 3.

I'll take a used set of premium tires over these, or a new cheap set of chinesium tires any day. Be diligent, check date codes and search often. I've got a set of half tread 35" duratracs for 300$ and a set of 3/4 tread 35" STT pros for 540$. Bang for the buck.

Just my two cents on treadwrights. I ran them on my last 4runner for a little while on KO2 carcasses in 285/75/16. They were heavy but I didn't have any trouble balancing them or any problem with highway use (I sold the truck before I could really see how long they would last) but I did notice that off road they chunk out very easily. Running the rocky trails around here they had big chunks missing out of the treads every time I came back from a trail run. For that reason alone I don't think I would buy another pair. I have new KO2's in the same size on my current rig and they are solid. Although much more expensive...

I only rockcrawl and never had that bad of an issue. You must spin tires a little. I air down to 12psi also. My wardens have no chunks missing. But I did chunck the guardoggs but they are very aggressive.

Yes I had open diffs front and rear. I’m sure some tire spin definitely contributed (I also didn’t used to air down as much as I should have) but it just seemed really bad like the tread was a more brittle compound or something. But it definitely could have been user error as well haha. Other than that it was a solid tire though

This was a frustrating adventure, but I learned a lot in the process.
I recently purchased some 285/75/16 E Treadwright Wardens. They don't offer many of their tires in anything below a D. I figured having the E rating would help with punishing the tires offroad and all the weight from rooftop tent and other camping gear.
The necessary wheel spacers, lift, and fender trimming commenced. When installed, they rubbed on the upper control arm, then after spacers they rubbed on the rear part of the front wheel well.
I had Discount Tire mount and balance them. I loved the look of a larger tire and something that was more aggressive than my last set. After a day or two of infatuation wore off, I got upset with the ride quality--there was an annoying vibration.
Second trip to Discount Tire to see if they could rebalance. They did a static balance and the ride improved, but still a little bouncy because one tire took a ton of weight to balance.
I chatted with Treadwright and their amazing customer service rep immediately sent me a new tire. Third trip to Discount tire to have it mounted and balanced. As I drove away, I shook my head and almost cried. Still shaking.
I THEN went to a specialty off-road shop figuring they would have a better machine and more experience in balancing larger tires. I think they had a road force machine... ? Anyway they told me one tire is out of round.
Called Treadwright again and the guy explained that an E rated tire is probably too heavy for a 3rd Gen 4runner. Something like an F250 is heavy enough to mitigate the rotating weight shaking at speed. I hadn't considered that an E rated tire would be too heavy since so many people mount them. And often the 33s or larger aren't available in lower than E rating. Then I recalled the FedEx shipping notification: 66lbs per tire!
Even if it's not true that E rated tires are too heavy for a 4runner, these particular tires were. And they weren't high quality enough to avoid vibrations. I'm getting these tires sent back. This was my experience, hopefully, yours is less of a hassle.
Anyone want to buy 5 Treadwright Wardens 285/75/16 E ??
Conclusion:
- 4 trips to a tire shop
- Crappy ride quality
- Don't recommend E rating (D might be okay)
- Now I have to get them shipped back to Treadwright or sold on CL
- After all the hassle, I wish I had gone with a different tire in the first place
Solution:
- 265/75/16 C Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs (45lbs each!)
- also, the smaller and lighter weight tire improved handling, acceleration, and braking
- with a more aggressive looking but smaller tire and wheel spacers + lift, the stance still looks awesome!
That'll teach me to go cheap again. The Duratracs are SUCH a better tire compared to the Treadwrights. Hope this review helps!

A lot of people are unfamiliar with what TreadWright makes. First off, the split tread you see on highways are 100% 18 wheelers. Two, for the numbers of trucks out there you are seein a miniscule amount. Its a proven fact by studies that retreads are no more dangerous than new.
Secondly, TreadWrights are NOT retreads. They are re-molds. Retreads have just the tread removed. TW removes a layer of rubber from sidewall bead to sidewall bead. Which brings up a 2nd point to the erson from AZ worrying about sidewalls being old and cracked from heat. They are not old. Again. Brand new layer of rubber bead to bead. On my 2nd set and looking for 3rd on a Jeep Wrangler. Couldnt be happier. $100 less PER tire
