If I put all season highway tires on the front with my a/t tires on the back for the winter, if they are the same diameter tires? Yes they are different tread of course but they are the same size around so it theoretically shouldn't cause drive train problems.

The A/T's are almost new. I can't afford 4 new all seasons, so I don't have much choice. I had planned to get 2 more a/t tires but decided I don't like them, plus the cost shot up. I know people (never me!) do this kind of mixing with 2wd trucks

Considering I can't even put it in 4wd with the front tires I have now, and we just got a bunch of snow, I ordered 2 HT. Unfortunately they won't get here for a week. Hopefully I will come up with the jack to replace the rears with HT shortly too.
 
I'd just get the same A/T tires. Just better to have matching tires. Personally I'd rather have better braking at the front from newer and more pliable tires. Trade off is the rear being more likely to slide out but that means you're giving it too much skinny pedal.

That was my original plan but they shot up in price. I hope to get 2 more HT's in a month or so for a matching set. if I ever become a fire lookout again I will get 2 more AT's but I don't really need AT's for my everyday driving.
 
Really just depends on how sure you are that you'll buy those H/Ts then. And then you'll be paying to mount and balance two more wheels by going the H/T route. Easily $60+ in extra cost. "Hoping" isn't the strongest case either. And once the hopes come true you'll have spent more money overall. I'd just get the A/T's. More upfront cost but less juggling and hoping.

How big of a cost difference are these A/T's? Numbers will help in this.
 
When you have low cash flow and big bills, how much it costs now is more important than how much it costs in the long run. Paying off my property taxes by December 30 is more important than having 4 matching tires at the moment, but having 4WD right away is very important on our snowy roads.

Anyway I ordered the HT's this morning so its done now.
 
Yeah can't lie tire prices are insane right now, I'm sure you'll be better off with any new tire vs the baldies.

LOL that's insane. If the shop already had the balancer there aren't much ways the price could shoot up. Last I checked even roadforce was about $50 a wheel on the high end.

No brainer find different shop, like changing Dentists might hurt 1/4-3/8th" tread remains.
Using same shop 20 yrs tire mounting alignment Techs know chit any lift always have.
2020 M&B bare rims $160, Alignment SPC uppers $180 IIRC haven't checked current alignment price.

2 Hunter tire setups 3 day waiting list tire emergency yank on outside pad.
Follow the money this place :)

Talked to indy shop today tire mount price good, Hunter rack Tech sounded good
price kind of backdoor atm bring SPC instructions my 4th SPC alignment been involved in get it worked out.

If you have part time 4WD you probably have open differentials. So slight tire diameter differences will not hurt your drivetrain.
Handling, however, on slick roads will be a problem with a worn out tire mixed with deep treadtires.
 
I'd be more worried about the handling differences between worn and new tires than the drivetrain - just get whatever you can afford to be safe on those snowy roads.

And it was. But I got the new front tires Saturday, and it handled great tonight in snow. It was also fun watching the millennial at the shop try to drive my 5 speed into the bay. He made it nearly an inch lol. :clap2:
