hood deflectors for 06+

any experience with hood deflectors, worth it? which brands are good? im thinking about trying one but not sure which one to go with etc, highest priority would be some sort of rubber/tape seal protecting the paint, don't want to cause any damage to the hood.

I have OEM ones on both my 03 and 08. They cam with silicone strips that are suPposed to protect the surface, but i learned the hard way that they dont work well nor very long.

I got some .75" dia. silicone pads (the kind that you put on chair legs so they dont scuff floors) and places them in as spacers between the hood and metal brackets. Its worked great ever since.

I'm running a weather tech bug sheild visor thing if thats what your posting about, not sure of a film or protective cover other than the automotive "bra's" out there. I def noticed a difference in the amount of bugs catching the windsheild it droped dramaticly; however, theres still big bugs that make it through to the windsheild, hoods certainly protected though and the weathertech has big open pockets where the hood molds down around the grill insert so water drains and doesnt form mold around the front edge of the hood wear the hood deflector is mounted, mounting was easy to just clamps in the grill insert and has two screws on each corner i love it though def somewhat of an aggressive look

yes aha I see the photos now but it's a bit hard to compare with yours because it's pre-2006 and the grille design is slightly different.

My personal favorite for the 4th Gen is the Toyota Canada OEM hood deflector. I have one in the back of my 4runner but there were parts missing when I went to install it yesterday, I will be picking up a new one tomorrow.

I'll post pictures once It's installed.

yes aha I see the photos now but it's a bit hard to compare with yours because it's pre-2006 and the grille design is slightly different.

If you went with the weather tech it will look similar to what i have from the hood line up only changes would be mount locations and i believe the body got an inch or so wider in 04 or 05 but its going to produce the same hood coverage and height prodjection.

I agree with the guy that posted about the canada OEM deflectors, i wasnt able to get a good source when i shoped for mine, the weather techs looked closly the same so i went with weather tech, plus weather tech is MADE IN USA so i love that IMO

I don't think it will damage the paint, there are 3M protective bumpons under it as well as protective pads under the clips between the clips and the paint.

I ordered it from my Toyota Dealer for about $100 bit expensive but worth it in my opinion.

how does in manage the bugs it looks to have a smaller "wing" angle than mine an i know mine still lets the big bugs through I never could find any reviews of the canadian OEM but i def like the look of it (weather tech sold me on having easy open pockets on both sides of the grill for ease of cleaning I had an old dodge with a big bug deflector and it held all kinda of grit and grim on the front lip of the hood ruined the paint under the deflector)

Yeah I'll have to get back to you on the ease of cleaning, it is quite snug to the hood which I like. it will probably collect dirt if you let it build up. I think if you spray under it, most of the build up should flow out the sides of the deflector.

it protects the leading edge of the hood quite well from rocks which is the main reason I have it. Here in western canada they put gravel and sand on the roads instead of salt so unless its summer time there are always pebbles flying around.

yeah down here in North carolina the only thing flying around on the roads (out in the country any) are bugs: moths, bees, locust, flys, beetles, lol you name it. late spring and late summer the bugs can sound like rain hitting your windsheild lol so the purpose of mine is to direct an air flow up over the windsheild in attempts to push the insects up over the windsheild. doesnt do much for the bumper or side view mirrors though lol. My weather tech has deffinantly reduced the number of bug guts having to be cleaned from my wind sheild though. And i can't say a single pebble has hit my windsheild from ridding behind big trucks and what not. but those front (teeth looking plates) on the front edge of the hood that wrap the grill insert are pretty beat up on my truck from pebbles, salt, and bugs. It looks like the canadian hood deflector covers those areas much better.

I don't drive my 4Runner everyday and generally like to keep things pretty clean, but my WeatherTech bug/stone deflector still destroyed the leading edge of the center section of my hood within a year. I know that it's been discussed and I was somewhat skeptical, but it's true and can post some pics of the damage later.

With that being said, I'd recommend a clear, protective film like what 3M offers.

@doozi please post pics im running the weather tech what broke? ( like where and how) I've had mine on for two years and havent had any issues even removed and reinstalled to paint my grill piece still no issues what went wrong with it???

My hood deflector came with quite a bit of padding and bumpons so I cant see my deflector beating up my paint. It's also very secure so I dont think it will move around enough to rub through the paint.
