I bought the Redline hood struts on a group buy here soon after I bought my 2000 Runner. Could not be happier with this mod, I hate lifting the full weight of the hood.

Yeah because it's so heavy. Lol

what ever you do, dont take the backing out of the hood scoop to make it functional. I did this on my X-Runner and it does expel some heat on hot days as I can see the hot air escaping when im stopped. But the engine bay gets soooooooo dirty, its ridiculous.

I wasn't planning on it. Water already drips out of the two drain holes right onto the engine - I can imagine how much worse that would get if that's scoop were open to the front of the vehicle

Fail

The positioning of the ball studs is WRONG

The shock does not sit level and is on an angle and as such is pushing upwards on the hood causing it to rise at the middle and hinges

I reviewed the Redline instructions and have noted the brackets they use and will order different brackets for both the hood and the fender side of the strut

Perhaps it would have been cheaper to just buy the Redline kit for $90 or follow the yotatech thread I originally set out to :cry2:

I was fairly into this thread when I first looked at it a couple days ago, but now it seems like too much drama involved. Maybe I'll look a little closer once the kinks are worked out and after I get a hood latch that doesn't require Hulk-like slamming to get to latch.

I was able to do the hood strut install thanks to Ritzy using lift supports from rear lexus lx450. Cost was 18 dollars from ebay. Instead of using rivets like Ritzy I used threaded insert and I am able to remove them when I want.

Tool used for install, I used the 1/4x20 but I would go with the 10x32 if I were to do it over.

I did not take picks but would post if people want to see. I just didn't measure and just installed them so when they lift the right side stops first then the left side and it bothers me other than that it is so convenient since being short it's a pain to lift hood and hold and prop the support rod. Also my 2002 is different from the pictures and I just wire tied the washer fluid line to the bracket that I had to remove to mount the lift support.

well i did order a pair of the LC struts but i guess they dont work? BUT thanks for that group buy code. i just put in a order for a pair of the redline ones. and ill be returning the LC ones as soon as they come in :llama:

Here's my pic of the 1/4x20 bolts I use with the theaded inserts from harbor freight. I just used what I had but did change them out to all stainless button head bolts except for the 12mm headed one and there are I think 6 or 8mm pitch. I used the lexus rear lx450 struts $18 of ebay and they are hard to compress by hand but installed on the hood they compress no problem at all. Threaded insert is the way to go, remove and install whenever you want.
