Hooked up Battery Wrong!!

Yesterday I bought a new battery for my 1993 Toyota 4Runner SR5. I got it all hooked up and nothing electrical worked. No lights came and and it would not start. The connecters did not fit snugly on the new battery posts so I put the old battery back in which was still working before I took it out. After I took out the new battery I realised that (+) and (-) terminals were opposite on the new battery than the old battery. I found some fuses that I blew, which got the dome lights and headlights working, but the power door locks don't work and the truck doesnt start. Any ideas would be appreciated. Did I fry the electrical system in my 4Runner by having it hooked up for under 5 minutes?

hook it back up correctly, and replace the fuses..

if everything is ok, it will be fine, the fuses will have caught it, but you have a MAJOR chance something is NOT ok..

Ive seen this happen before on a honda prelude, and it blew the fuses, but no harm to the electronics...

But..it had been mereley 2/3 seconds hooked up like that...

Like i said, replace the fuses, pray for the best...

I replaced all of the fuses that I could tell that were blown, but the rest look fine. There are some bigger ones, I guess they are relays, I don't know if they are blown and if I can get replacement ones very eaisly. I read something about it could be a fusible link which goes to the starter. I will look into that as well.

What are some other things that I may have damaged by doing this?

Anything with a circuit, from your ECU, BCM, instrument cluster, etc..

COULD be messed up, all you can do is replace the fuses and pray

Check for a fusable link. If it has one it will be blown and should have saved the system.

It there is not check for a burned out wire going to the starter.

The alternator diodes are a dead short with a reversed polarity. Either a fusible link blew or the diodes. You should have noticed a lot of current draw or smoke when you reversed the battery.

Thanks for all of your input guys. I had my mechanic take a look after I was done screwing around with it. It turned out the the fusible link had blown which saved the rest of the electical system. I had the correct battery installed and the fusible link replaced and all is working fine now. I will never make that mistake again.

I dont know anything about vehicles so i was pulling a trailor with my fiancees truck and the trailor had breaks so it drove for a few then stalled and died. i figured it was a fuse or something cause it. my friend insisted it was something else and took the battery outta his f250 and hooked it up to my girls truck backwards for about 5 seconds. It started smoking and the lights flashed and that was all. Well it blew a bunch of fuses and i push started the truck and drove it home. My brother in law came over and replace the starter and adjusted the terminals and everything but the stereo worked. we drove it around for two days and then my fiancee stalled it and its back to nothing working and wont start. What do yall think...

Personally, I'd be kicking that "friends" ass!!! What kind of trailer was it?

me and my dad were working on the 4runner 04 4th gen v6 the other day an went to jump it an he hooked up the cable wrong positive to neg an my horn an wipers went off an now i have a loss of some power like my heat radio power windows ext we checked the fuses an they seem to be good does anyone know what else i could have messed up?

Try checking all fuse links and fuses in box under hood.

Checked all fuses an fuse links got everything back now when the ignition is turned on it automatically trys to start not in the starting position but in the on position..... anyone have any ideas why that's doing that

Have you tried disconnecting the battery for at least 10 minutes or longer to reset the ECM, sometimes that what it takes to get things back on track?

It may also take driving it a couple of times/cycles after the battery reset for the computer/ECM to relearn all parameters.

Disconnect the battery cables and touch them together. Not connected to the battery!
The cables to each other. This completly releases charges in any diode and allowing it to reset or clear. Diodes only allow current to flow in one direction, somewhere you have one that isn't working correctly.
