Dr Fauci, who is now claiming the administration should have acted earlier than it did to curtail travel with China, when he's on record at that time as stating the Wuhan virus is no big deal.
I'm kinda amazed people don't understand this. The medical system has limited capacity. If the normal spread will overwhelm the capacity (see NY) then the spread by the * 'murica and freedom* people will create a constraint on services available. That puts the people who do act in a socially conscious way at greater risk.
If you're willing to agree to not go to a hospital or seek medical care and die at home if that's the outcome, then you're actually living with the risk you're taking. If not - you're not only effecting yourself. It's not a particularly complicated idea here. If you want to be part of a society and take advantage of the benefits, you also get to live with the costs at times. If not - that's okay by me. But suffer at home without medical care when you get sick. Live up to what you claim you're doing.
Some lite reading for day drinking.

" in the United States, the 9/11 attacks led to emergency measures that persist to this day. The detention center in Guantánamo Bay is still open. Targeted drone killings continue. Under the Patriot Act, mass surveillance is still possible.
“September 11th is the appropriate analogy,” said Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch. “We had a fearful public that was willing to countenance a government that was taking steps that undermined civil rights and were difficult to reverse over a long time.
“I fear that we’re entering a parallel period.”
I guess I'm puzzled why you thing someone else potentially getting sick effects you. If you're properly quarantined why does it matter what someone else does?
The models forecasting ICU beds and deaths have been revised significantly downward, several times, and they're still too high.
Because it ain't all about me. If a dozen people get sick, then they'll infect many others and that will overwhelm the medical system.I guess I'm puzzled why you thing someone else potentially getting sick effects you. If you're properly quarantined why does it matter what someone else does?
Go back and read post #557.

We’re all in this same big pool.
Its a funny analogy but its inaccurate.
If you are properly quarantined, as in not even in the pool, why does it matter to you if someone potentially urinates in it?
In this very concise nutshell, you've nailed it, I think. While I want to do everything I can to mitigate and eventually terminate the effects of this Chinese virus, I clearly can see the huge dangers of what's happening with voluntary 'suspensions' of our freedoms. Never before in our history would we have been able to pull off so sweeping a global 'shutdown' as we've done now, largely due to our current technology. It is indeed a fine balance, and it's very easy for me to become suspicious of certain people. We really need wisdom right now. There is a fine balance. Folks would have to walk and chew gum at the same time. Don't give up their guaranteed rights and still follow instructiins of the cdc and gov experts to mitigate the virus.
So would you agree not to take one of those beds? Have a fever and trouble breathing - take some Advil and sleep it off at home? And your wife, your kids, your parents? They're going to skip the hospital too?
And those idiots who don't social distance do affect you (even if you are self-quaratining) because that increases the time before the curve gets flattened.
The way this thread is going is a prime example of why government needs to set restrictions - because too many are too stupid.

Y'all read the article about the guy with the "sniffles" in Chicago that went to the funeral - a dozen got sick and three died.

Y'all do know that the Chinese WH Group bought Smithfield in 2013. I wonder how much interaction Smithfield has had with their Chinese owners since November.

But is it not a slippery slope? I could list out several areas where governments fail to legislate/protect people from themselves, so what makes this situation any different from our day to day perils in which people making stupid decisions kill a few hundred thousand people every year?Or should we all be permanently locked in cages for our own good?
Sorry for the snark, don't take it personally - I'm just venting and fed up with this whole situation, as I'm sure millions of others are.
The first three are fine. It’s been almost four weeks of stay at home. I’ll feel better if
1. Medical providers get all the gear they need.
2. The tests for active infection and antibodies are widely available.
3. Our leaders agree on a plan to put people back to work.
4. I can buy more TP.
