As NYC is ramping down, other parts of the country are ramping up in places where there are people crowded together: nursing homes, group homes, prisons, assembly line manufacturing, meat processing plants. A lot of these are in rural parts of the country where there are small hospital facilities. Look out if those get overrun.

Yeah, I was just making an observation that the "Rest of the United States" part of that chart depicting new cases seems to trend right along with the CDC's depiction of tests. Which it would, I expect.
 
I'm still amazed how the spread of the virus either depends on the population density, the population density, or the actual intelligence of the virus.

If you believe how contagious and deadly it is, we should be seeing sky high morbidity rates among the homeless in NY, SF, and LA, and retail store employees - Target, Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, grocery chains, etc. It's incredible how the virus avoids killing people in these areas but will kill you for sure if you work in a small business.

Covid-19 *is* spreading among the homeless. Whenever any people are packed close together.

In all of the kind of stores you mention I’ve seen them masked up and distancing and sanitizing carts, keypads, using spit shields at the cashier, etc for weeks. Maybe that system works. But yeah I think you’re right, dense packing of people is the problem.

Not true.
An acquaintance of mine died from it. She was a Registered Nurse (so she was well aware of handwashing, etc) and definitely NOT as you said " very sick and old" . As for what you call "very very unlucky " I don't think that's something that can be quantified.

Sorry to hear about your acquaintance.

Healthcare workers treating covid 19 patients have front row seats with sick people carrying high viral loads. Same goes for people stuck in crowded subway trains or confined to nursing homes.

In contrast, people outside with some carrying the virus would see much lower viral loads, and they should have better chances of fighting off the virus.
 
That makes sense.
I just take exception to statements like the one I quoted. Blanket, sweeping and uninformed statements tend to be wrong...that one was a prime example.

Fact check: Medicare pays hospitals more money for COVID-19 patients

According to their fact-checking, a COVID-19 diagnosis pays more than an influenza diagnosis, and the use of ventilators ups that pay by ~300%. If true, that's just one part of how our medical system is "broken" by those that have an agenda.

and a heart attack pays more than an ingrown toenail...

A ventilator means ICU and ICU stays are expensive.

Of course a COVID diagnosis will cost more. Even if it is an asymptomatic case, the diagnosis itself requires isolation, more PPE, extra cleaning etc. - all that costs money.

This is a great coin operated incentive for healthcare providers to presume everyone has covid 19 per CDC guidelines.

If I can infer from that, "gaming" the system to get more money is the way our medical system is incentivized - up the DSM code to deliver the highest return.

Completely the opposite unless you want worse care and higher costs through socialism or communism. more government = more inefficiencies, more gaming and more theft of taxpayer wealth.

Government policy is causing inefficient and sloppy outcomes as it is. Last thing we need is more government.
