hope im not in a jam with front diff seal, pinion, bearing

so i just ran a major analysis through my head in regards to keeping my 04 with 150k (already maybe 4 or 5k in mods) or bailing and getting a rubicon.
ended up deciding to keep t4r and ordered a few grand of new parts (winch, bumper) and bringing it in for inspection sticker and slight noise from front end i thought no big deal.

its a slight humming (wom wom wom, yet metal on metal sound rotational grind but very slight sounding, at low speeds 10 - 20 mph) thought brake pin or something minor on the chassis.

mechanic pulled wheel and checked brakes, couldnt find it. he didnt hear it on the test ride but maybe because roads are wet and loud/lubed. ive heard sound consistently for a for a month or so now. concerning he didnt hear it - has a rare closed shop all next week wondering if he knew it might not be something to deal with the day before that.

doing research sounds like maybe front pinion bearing or seal or something, left undone would grenade front diff. this shop put napa lifetimes CVs in just a year ago and i havent wheeled much since then...

hoping i can have them redo a seal or bearing and be done with this.

making me real nervous for spending this type of money on this rig when i recently considered just getting a rubicon that wont break as much offroading (?) yet less reliable and costly up front.

i own the 2004 t4r which is nice.

hoping for best. suggestions welcome. ill bring it back to mechanic in coming weeks he suggested.

Just for the heck of it, have you thought about having a dealership estimate the cause and $ to fix? It may cost a hundred or so for the estimate, and maybe too much for them to fix, but it would be additional knowledge.

That noise could be a ton of different things and no a Jeep won't solve your problems.

Jeeps have problems too and swapping vehicles won't solve your woes. Even the new Rubicons have problems. They are going through serious recalls on the power steering recently.

Check Pinion for play and verify you have differential fluid in there. That will tell you if you should be driving this around.

Wheel bearings are easy to check, simply jack up one tire at a time, grab the top and bottom of tire and rock it. If there is a lot of play then you'd know it's time for a wheel bearing.

Sometimes I find that noises like this come and go in my vehicle. May be "normal" for a vehicle with 150 k. I think the big things are warped rotors, frozen calipers etc. I know i get sounds like that from time to time and had it this morning and either they go away or something gets picked up

If it is more your OCD about the vehicle, id just cont to watch it.

In terms of off roading - if it were my id go for a 100 series landcruiser or an FJ if youre looking for something new

thank you and everyone else. i can overthink things sometimes yet have decent intuition. hoping for the best here. going to confirm wheel bearing this weekend.

will report back with whether sound persists during 4h, locked, and while turning.

theres a bunch of threads on this, and it can be a lot to absorb, so maybe in future this will help out someone

Wheel bearing sounds just like you describe, rotational grinding/whirring noise. If it gets bad enough you can feel it in the floorboard lol. If you turn right and sound goes away it's the left. If you turn left and sound goes away, it's the right. You can check by jacking it up, grabbing wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock and applying pressure. If there's any lateral movement/play it's the wheel bearing.

I replaced mine with this guy's and they are great quality. Been about two years no issues.

Wheel bearings first.
Just do them all if the car is old. Seriously.
I had a much louder whaaawhaaa with clickyclickclicky at slower speeds and it WAS the rear.
$2500 fix at dealer. I figure have them do it for the $1500 part. Whole pumpkin was shot. Probably due to a low fluid situation when I first bought it when the dealer just packed more grease into a leaky wheel bearing instead of fixing it and it ran dry in a long trip.

a little follow up. drove to my parents and took my pops out for a ride in 4runner. he could barely hear the noise that i do at 10-20mph. im going to see if it gets worse and/or have mechanic look into it more in the future. i was prob jumping ahead with my thinking on needing something. sometimes with this rig i have to keep in mind how damn well it runs before assuming its going to fail or did. the noise might just be scalloped tread but at this point not enough to dig into it full out. ill be wheeling it and modding it.

this showed up yesterday

to my above thinking...as long as i remember the oil fill-neck is sludgy with oil
all on it and near the oil cap on my rig. not sure if it come out between oil changes or what the story is. doesnt look good. combined with fact that my dip stick was rusted when i bought it, i got it to free up, but it doesnt work well and i cant read my engine oil levels, for 3 years. i just change the oil every 5k and dont see any leaks. in future i might have mechanic replace dip stick assembly, and address the oil at fill neck. she runs like a damn dream though haha, could keep doing what im doing and reaping the unkillability of yota

added some coolant the other day (hadnt checked it in a year) was a bit below low fill line, cold. radiator looks good and AC or trans hardlines that for many like to corrode.
