Hey guys seems here lately when i drive my 4runner it gets really bad MPG worse then ever i dont know if its do to rise in gas cost or something or something wrong on the truck. It seems to cost me almost 2 gallons to drive a 20 mile drive thats there and back and mostly hwy driven. I know when i had my 4x4 toyta pickup it was a 22re 4cly stock gears i had 33's on it as well and i got around all over the place on little amounts of gas so u think on my v6 4runner that the tires begin 33's wouldnt make to much a difference in how much power it uses to pull and cost more in gas. I know when i come from driven down the hwy to a stop u will smell a werid smell like its burning lean or to rich one or the other which i smelt this smell in alot of cars i dorve when driven them under a load like speeding up a hill or something.

It might be your O2 sensors. When I had my 3rd Gen, my mileage dropped about 6-8mpg almost overnight... no CEL or anything. For some reason, I thought to use the scan tool at one of the local auto parts stores and it said something to the effect of "O2 sensor slow to respond". I ordered new sensors, installed them, and the through the next tank of gas my mileage was back where it belonged. By the way, while I was waiting for the sensors to be delivered, the CEL came on. It might be worth checking into.

The biggest gain in MPG I've seen yet is replacing my fuel filter. I have no idea what I'm averaging, but I know it's noticeably different than before. So much so, in fact, that I was beginning to worry my low fuel light was no longer working based on the when it used to come on.

When have your last replaced your spark plugs? I saw a noticeable drop of ~5 mpg, misfires, and lack of power before I saw a CEL. I replaced all my plugs and the mileage immediately returned. I would do the following 1) seafoam if you haven't done it recently 2) check air filter to make sure it's not clogged 3) replace plugs if not done recently 4) replace fuel filter if not done recently 5) clean throttle body 6) replace 02 sensors. Good luck.

Last March when I bought our T4r it was in dire need of a tune-up getting 13.5 mpg. Did the usual stuff; PCV, front O2 sensor, Plugs, Ngk Wires, clean MAF and TB, etc. That got me up to 17mpg. Then I changed the plugs again from NGK to Denso TT plugs (single electrode) which got me to 18 mpg. Then I found a small leak in the rear O2 sensor gasket and resealed it and now it looks like it should be close to 20 mpg based on the improved distance I see at the 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 tank marks. Sometimes its a lot of little things that eat away at the MPG. But the O2 sensor and plugs gave the biggest improvement.
As for spark plugs I'm using similar plugs that the new Toyota's use today with dual needle/single electrode plugs. Technology has improved, why not take advantage of it.

I feel your pain I get 13 mpg which sucks balls and having a S/C I have to get premium gas which eats away at the funds. I perfer to drive my v8 tundra instead b.c of the better gas mileage and I get to use the cheaper gas in it ( not that cheaper gas is CHEAP)

You do all realize that when you get bigger tires your odometer is reading low, correct?
Also, make sure your tires are properly inflated, especially if you have bigger tires. I made the mistake of going on a long trip w/o realizing my rear driver's side tire was only at 20 psi... brought my fuel mileage down by more than 30%.
