Horrible Gas Mileage

How many tanks have you used gone through to get your numbers?

2 non full and 2 full fills. Currently in the second full fill. Making this calculation manually, and keeping track with carcare app. My other 99 SR5 does the same, even when it was 46K, currently 96.2K, and from what I read at the moment that model had also to better numbers. I am also aware that 5th LE is heavier and has larger cc engine, but still reading the numbers of all users this is just way below

I'm trying to read through lots of posts/threads here but can't find out whether anyone successfully improved their mpg?
I have 2010 limited with 265/70/17 AT P(C) tires. No other mods, 122k miles on it. Sensor and manual calculation end up at 12/13mpg average. When I'm on a highway at 65-70mph and re-set the sensor it shows 17mpg HIGHWAY.
Any ideas/suggestions?
TIA.

The vehicles are set up to be maxed out for gas mileage, bone stock. There is usually a little bump up after break in period and the 1st oil change, but those are some pretty low numbers. I’m getting better then that fully loaded with a roof top tent and 275 70r 17 tires. What tire pressure are you running? Are you quick on the accelerator? Maybe time to try changing the spark plugs and air filter, possibly clean the fuel injectors.

I've had my 2010 for a bit over a year and put 30K on it. Currently sitting at 95K. Mostly easy backroads and highway. Averaging 21.2. This is probably over 50 tanks since I reset and it was similar before the reset.

I'm easy on the gas, anticipate stops, rarely drive above 75, A/S Michelins and it's levelled 0.85 on 5100s.

I am not aware of any special tricks. All season tires, easy on the gas, check your air filter, etc.

Thank you for suggestions. I'll look into spark plugs. As to driving habit, I see the "eco" light 90% of the time, basically I drive like an old lady :). Tire pressure around 38. I just put in first bottle of fuel injector cleaner will see if that helps.

Gas Mileage

Always a bit surprised by these gas mileage threads. If anyone cares that much about gas mileage having purchased or leased a 4Runner please see this forum. https://priuschat.com/forum/ Then dirve (watching that stupid Eco bar) to their Toyota dealer and trade their 4runner in for a Prius. There. I said it.

High elevation, lots of hills, lift, armor, and tires makes the Eco light go off every time I feather the gas.

Comments like yours pop up in every mileage thread and they're unhelpful and repetitive. Mpg not a primary concern but still relevant and worthy of discussion, especially on vehicles that are driven high mileages.

I would respectfully disagree with you, he is speaking the truth. It is important for everyone to know what they are buying prior to purchasing it and deal with the compromises they signed up for. A simple Google search will produce more information about the lack of decent fuel mileage with these things along with the effect of modifications to that mileage.

I would think that the only way these threads would actually produce some benefit is if someone could share information on how to improve the mileage which I have not seen to this point.

My humble $.02

I lost almost 2 mpg immediately after installing mud flaps on my '16 Limited.
I just lost almost 2 mpg by throwing on my Blizzaks. Stock size. I used to sit around 22mpg, now I'm at more like 20. Lots of highway driving for mine. And country roads.

No, it's his opinion, and it's a boring and typical one in threads like this. If you're at a party, and people are talking about something that you think is irrelevant, just don't join the conversation. Walking up and saying "you guys are wasting your time, your topic is crap", would be odd and anti-social. As far as the specifics of the conversation are concerned, how certain mods affect mileage (a/t tires, roof racks, etc) is quite important to some. Additionally, if someone's mpg is far below the average it might indicate a mechanical issue or driver issue. If so, getting the opinion of others with similar vehicles is especially helpful.

I'm two tanks into my new 4R and I'm sitting at an average of 16.4 (calculated at the pump). I'm sure this will improve as the engine gets more miles on it. I drive primarily at ~60 mph, but there is some city driving in this mix.

That's because no one likes to take the bad news. The best mileage you are ever going to get is when your vehicle is stock. From there, that number only goes down. You aren't going to do anything to a stock 4R to get better mileage.

I've posted before, I can still average 20mpg on a highway trip with 255/75s, sliders and a lift. It is possible. I also live where it's warm and mostly flat. I don't sit in traffic, I don't start my truck and let it warm up, etc.

^ This. You can't really improve the 5th gen's fuel economy. You will start to degrade it if you do any of the following:
- Put bigger and/or more aggressive tread tires on.
- Put more weight on (armor, gear).
- Put a suspension lift on.
- Accelerate a lot.
- Warm up your engine for minutes before driving.
- Tow.
- Go up hills.
- Drive into a headwind.
- Look at it wrong.

So if you want to get the best fuel economy out of your 4runner, don't modify it.

Certainly your opinion but the vast majority of what I am reading is people with mostly stock configuration vehicles complaining about fuel economy. Threads that detail what loss of mileage you can expect from modifications are completely different animals. The fact is the vehicle is not a fuel miser, never will be and that information is quite available at the touch of a keyboard prior to purchasing. I average about 17 mpg which is actually better than what I expected and better than my 1st Gen Lifted Tacomas. It was no surprise to me that I didn't break 20 m.pg. in an overweight shoebox with 5 forward gears nor did I purchase it for that

Before 4runner I had 2012 Infiniti g37x. Even though it's pretty powerful I was getting 20/26mpg which is "ideal" considering the power you get. When I was getting 4runner I figured I'll get 5mpg less, which is fine since I don't have to put in premium gas. But it seems it's closer to 10mpg difference, which kinda upsetting a bit. That said, I still enjoy every moment of owning 4runner and do not regret trading-in the Infiniti.
I still hope mpg will improve after changing spark plugs.
